The First Chapter is Disney Lorcana’s first set, Set 1, and the game launched with it in August 2023. It has 216 unique cards, 204 standard cards and 12 Enchanted printings, the rarity Ravensburger revealed with this set.

When did The First Chapter come out?

In August 2023:

  • The game launched in August 2023, and The First Chapter held 216 unique cards.
  • It went on sale in August 2023 in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, with the English version also sold in Italy.
  • It came in English, French and German, depending on the market.
  • Ravensburger’s own online shop expected it from September 1, 2023.
  • Ravensburger’s booth at Gen Con 2023 would be the first place anyone could buy the set.

A reprint was due in the 2023 holiday season, in every country where Set 1 had launched, and it would carry no label or other mark. So a missing reprint mark on a First Chapter card says nothing about which print run it came from. Our guide to Lorcana set release dates puts the set in the full run, and Rise of the Floodborn covers the set that came next.

How many cards are in The First Chapter?

Each card number is written with the set number first:

Card numbers Printings What they are
1-1 to 1-204 204 Standard cards: 72 Common, 54 Uncommon, 48 Rare, 18 Super Rare and 12 Legendary
1-205 to 1-216 12 Enchanted printings of standard cards

That makes 216. The standard cards are 149 characters, 35 actions and 20 items. Every one of the 204 carries a different full name.

How is the set numbered?

By ink, then by card type. Each of the six inks fills one unbroken block of 34 numbers:

Ink Card numbers
Amber 1-1 to 1-34
Amethyst 1-35 to 1-68
Emerald 1-69 to 1-102
Ruby 1-103 to 1-136
Sapphire 1-137 to 1-170
Steel 1-171 to 1-204

Inside every block the characters come first, then the actions, then the items, and each run is in alphabetical order. So Ariel - On Human Legs is card 1-1 and Plasma Blaster, the last Steel item, is 1-204. The 149 characters share 91 names. Mickey Mouse has the most versions, seven, and Maleficent has five. Our card number entry explains why the full number matters when you buy or sell.

Which cards got Enchanted versions?

Ravensburger introduced the Enchanted rarity with 12 cards from this set. They are full-art cards with alternative artwork, a new rarity symbol and a special foil called Inkwash, numbered above 204, the count of standard cards. The card itself is the same as its standard version apart from the art and finish. Fans first found them at Gen Con.

The 12 come in this order:

Enchanted number Card Standard number Standard rarity Ink
1-205 Hades - King of Olympus 1-5 Rare Amber
1-206 Stitch - Carefree Surfer 1-21 Legendary Amber
1-207 Elsa - Spirit of Winter 1-42 Legendary Amethyst
1-208 Mickey Mouse - Wayward Sorcerer 1-51 Super Rare Amethyst
1-209 Genie - On the Job 1-75 Super Rare Emerald
1-210 Mickey Mouse - Artful Rogue 1-88 Super Rare Emerald
1-211 Aladdin - Heroic Outlaw 1-104 Super Rare Ruby
1-212 Maui - Hero to All 1-114 Rare Ruby
1-213 Aurora - Dreaming Guardian 1-139 Super Rare Sapphire
1-214 Belle - Strange but Special 1-142 Legendary Sapphire
1-215 Simba - Returned King 1-189 Rare Steel
1-216 Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy 1-193 Super Rare Steel

Three patterns stand out. Each ink got exactly two. All 12 are characters, and none is a Common or Uncommon in its standard printing. And the Enchanted numbers follow the order of the standard cards, so the higher the standard number, the higher the Enchanted one. That order does not hold in every set: in Rise of the Floodborn, two Emerald cards swap places. Our Enchanted entry and our guide to Lorcana Enchanted cards and box contents cover the rarity across sets, and Lorcana rarities explains the other five.

Did First Chapter cards come back in later sets?

Yes, mostly in one set. Of the 204 standard card names, fifty-one came back in Sets 2 to 13, ignoring letter case:

Later set First Chapter names that appear again
Fabled (Set 9) 47
Whispers in the Well (Set 10) 2: Dragon Fire and Mickey Mouse - Detective
Reign of Jafar (Set 8) 1: Captain Hook - Forceful Duelist, card 8-186
Winterspell (Set 11) 1: Let It Go
Every other set None

Fabled brought back some cards from the first sets, including Enchanted versions of fan favorites. Two First Chapter characters with no Enchanted printing in Set 1 got one in Fabled: Mickey Mouse - Steamboat Pilot (9-231) and Hades - Infernal Schemer (9-237). Four of the 12 characters with a First Chapter Enchanted printing came back too, as standard Fabled cards: Stitch - Carefree Surfer (9-24), Elsa - Spirit of Winter (9-43), Aurora - Dreaming Guardian (9-153) and Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy (9-188).

The reprints do not always keep their rarity. Eight of the 47 changed in Fabled: four Uncommons became Commons, two Super Rares became Rares and two Rares became Uncommons. The Queen - Wicked and Vain, a Super Rare at 1-56, is a Rare at 9-35. Our Fabled guide covers that set’s reprints from every early set.

Our booster box and booster pack entries explain the formats.

What should you check before you buy?

  1. A 1 in front of the number. It separates a First Chapter card from a later printing of the same card, such as a Fabled reprint, which starts with 9.
  2. A number above 1-204 for an Enchanted card. The number in the listing title and on the card in the photos should agree.
  3. The rarity of a reprint. Eight Fabled reprints carry a different rarity from their First Chapter printing, so match both the number and the rarity.
  4. Unbroken wrap on sealed product. A sealed product should arrive in its factory wrap, and our guide to storing sealed product covers keeping it that way.

How do you check First Chapter card prices?

Not on Rip.fan, whose card price lookup and price pages cover English Pokémon cards only. Use dated sold listings instead. Confirm the 1 in front of the card number first, then the printing: Elsa - Spirit of Winter at 1-42, its Enchanted version at 1-207 and its Fabled printing at 9-43 are three different cards to a buyer. Then take prices from completed sales with dates, not from asking prices. Our guides to checking a Lorcana card’s value and finding what a card sold for explain the method.

The seller fee calculator works out what TCGplayer and Whatnot leave you after fees. The trading card hub gathers every Lorcana set guide, and the One Piece OP-01 and Yu-Gi-Oh! Rarity Collection guides cover where two other card games started.
