Terms of Use
Last updated Effective
These terms are the agreement between you and Rip.fan for using rip.fan, its tools and its weekly brief. We have written them to be read, in plain words. Please read them together with our Privacy Policy, which explains what happens to your information, our Cookie Policy, which lists the cookies and browser storage the site uses and how to change your cookie choice, and our Affiliate Disclosure, which explains how Rip.fan is paid.
1. Who runs Rip.fan
Rip.fan is a hobby publication about online card rips: the sites and apps that sell sealed packs, slab packs and mystery boxes of real cards and other collectibles, and the cards that come out of them. In these terms, “Rip.fan”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the operator of rip.fan. “You” means anyone who visits the site, uses one of its tools or signs up for its weekly brief.
Rip.fan has no shop and no checkout. An account is optional and free, and it keeps your collection and your watchlist, nothing more. We do not sell packs, cards or anything else on this site, and we never take a payment from you.
The fastest way to reach us is email, at editor@rip.fan. The contact page says what to write to us about.
2. Accepting these terms
By using rip.fan you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.
If you use the site for a company or another organization, you agree to these terms for it as well, and you confirm that you are allowed to.
3. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when we add a tool, change how the weekly brief works or change a service the site relies on. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page shows when the terms last changed, and the “Effective” date shows when this version of them first applied.
If we make a change that matters to how you use the site, we will say what changed on this page. A change applies from the day it is published. It does not reach back to how you used the site before then. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the new terms.
4. What Rip.fan is
Rip.fan publishes:
- News about rip sites, marketplaces, grading companies, set releases and the apps collectors use, written from public sources.
- Guides that each answer one question, such as how a vaulted card reaches your door or how a grading company’s prices work.
- Reviews and rankings of the rip sites that pass our listing checks, each scored after a hands-on test or from its published facts, and a table of every rip site we track.
- A shop of the packs our partner sites sell, each with its price as the site’s own pack page showed it and the date we read it, and a Buy button that is the site’s partner link.
- Tools that look up figures or work them out for you, such as the card price lookup, the collection tracker and the grading cost calculator. Section 7 covers them.
- The weekly brief, an email of the week’s stories. Section 12 covers it.
Rip.fan’s content is a human and AI collaboration. People set the site’s focus and its editorial rules, and decide which sites we list. The screenshots and notes behind most reviews come from our own use of each site; a few reviews rest on a site’s published pages alone, and say so. AI tools research the public sources behind each story, draft it in our house style and run automated checks of its facts and of our policies. Our Editorial Policy explains the whole process.
5. Information, not advice
Everything on Rip.fan is general information about collecting. Nothing on the site is advice to buy, sell or hold any card, pack or other item. Nothing here is legal, tax or accounting guidance, or advice about your own situation. We do not tell you what to buy, we do not value individual cards for you, and we do not predict prices.
Card prices change, and a rip site can change its fees, rules, packs and card rates at any time. Before you spend money anywhere, read that site’s own terms and pages. The decisions you make are your own.
6. Reviews, rankings and dated facts
Our reviews and rankings follow How We Rate. In short:
- The rankings hold the sites that pass our checks: packs of real, physical items. We also review sites we tested and do not recommend, and we never link to them.
- A ranked site is scored out of 10 on eight weighted criteria, after our hands-on test or from its published facts. Each review says which.
- A partner link never changes a score or a rank, and no site can pay for a better one.
- A site we tested and do not recommend may have a review, with no link to it.
- The main ranking ends on a table of every rip site we track, ranked or not. A site we track only from its own published pages is listed there with no score and a plain link to its own home page, which no other page carries.
Every fact we publish about a site, a fee, a price or a card rate is stated as of the date shown with it. Sites change their terms, often without notice, so a fact can go out of date after that date. If you find one that has, tell us through the Corrections page and we will check it again.
A review describes a site as we found it on the test date. It is our opinion, based on that test and on the site’s published terms. It is not a promise that the site will treat you the same way.
7. Our tools
Rip.fan’s tools are free and need no account. They show reference figures and estimates, never an offer from us or from anyone else.
Card prices: the card price lookup, the card finder and the card pages
These show the NM market price of each card in the card games we cover, from our weekly price check, with the date of the check. A market price is a reference figure from our card data supplier on the date shown. It is not an offer to buy or sell your card and not a valuation of it, and what you can actually get or pay may be different.
Your lists: the collection tracker, the set checklist and the trade checker
You list the cards you own, tick off the cards of a set, or set out both sides of a trade. Your lists stay in your browser, on your device, as our Cookie Policy explains, and we never receive them, unless you sign in: the collection tracker then keeps your collection with your account. If you clear your browser’s data, the lists it kept are gone, so save a CSV copy of anything you want to keep. Totals are worked out from the same weekly prices and carry the same limits as the price lookup.
Your account
- Signing in. We email a sign-in link to the address you give, or you sign in with Google. Use an address that is yours, and keep your email to yourself: anyone who can open your email can sign in as you.
- One reader, one account. Do not make accounts in bulk, or use one to send automated requests.
- Your lists are yours. On your cards page you can download what your account holds and delete your account at any time. We may delete an account that breaks these terms, and we delete any account whose owner asks us to.
- Watch emails. If you watch a card, we email you after a weekly price check in which it moved. The prices in them carry the same limits as the card price pages. Turn them off on your cards page or with the link in the email.
The rip simulator
The rip simulator is a free sample of how a graded pack works. You open a sample pack and see a real card’s picture inside a slab the page draws around it. It involves no purchase and no payment. Nothing of value is given out or held for you: no card is sent to you, and there are no points, credits or balances of any kind. The packs, card rates and value ranges it shows are illustrative samples, not any real site’s packs, and the grade on a sample slab is not a grading company’s grade. Slabs you keep go to a sample binder in your browser only, kept apart from the collection tracker.
The card scanner
The card scanner reads a photo of a card and shows the cards in our price list that fit what it read.
- You confirm the card yourself. The scanner’s answer is a best match from a photo, and it can be wrong.
- A price it shows carries the same limits as the price lookup.
- Each connection can make a limited number of scans a minute, an hour and a day, and the scanner can pause for everyone for the rest of the day when it reaches its daily cap.
- Our Privacy Policy explains what happens to your photo.
Calculators and reference tools
The grading cost calculator, the seller fee calculator, the shipping cost estimator, the centering checker, the release calendar, the sleeve and supplies finder, the pack explorer and the compare sites table work from the price lists, fees, rates, grading standards and dates that companies publish, as we read them on the date shown. Those companies can change them at any time. A result is an estimate. Check the company’s own page before you rely on it.
We can change, pause or remove any tool at any time.
8. Partner links and other sites
Some links to rip sites are partner links. Each goes first to a short redirect page on our site that names the site, then on to the site. If you join or buy through one, the site may pay Rip.fan a commission at no extra cost to you. A partner offer’s code works the same way. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains all of this in full.
When you leave Rip.fan for another site:
- That site is run by someone else. We do not control it, and we are not responsible for its content, prices, fees, card rates, vaulting, shipping, trade-in offers or availability, or for how it handles your information.
- Its own terms, privacy policy and cookie policy apply. Read them before you sign up or pay.
- Any account, purchase or disagreement is between you and that site. Rip.fan takes no part in it, never handles your payment, and cannot refund, cancel or change an order.
- A partner offer or code is set by the partner. The partner decides whether it applies to you, and can change or end it at any time.
Rip.fan links to another site only through a partner link. Our news may mention any site as a matter of fact, with no link to it.
9. Card prices, card images and trademarks
Card prices and card pictures on Rip.fan come from Scrydex, our card data supplier. Each page that shows them credits Scrydex in plain text and gives the date the prices were checked. Card pictures load from Scrydex’s image server. Card art belongs to its rights holders and is shown only to identify each card. Please do not copy card pictures from Rip.fan to use anywhere else.
The illustrations on Rip.fan are generated for Rip.fan with an image model, as our Editorial Policy explains. They never show real card artwork, likenesses of real people, brand logos, text or faces.
Product and company names, logos and card art belong to their owners and appear only to identify them. Rip.fan holds no license from any card maker, grading company or league. Naming a company on Rip.fan does not mean that it endorses us or that we endorse it.
10. Using the site
You may read Rip.fan, share links to its pages and quote short passages with a link back to the page. When you use the site, please do not:
- copy or republish our articles, reviews, tables or data in bulk, or present them as your own;
- run crawlers, scrapers or scripts that send requests faster than a person reading would, put a strain on our server, or get around any limit we set. Search engines that follow our robots.txt file are welcome;
- send automated or bulk requests to the weekly brief signup or the card scanner, or sign up an email address that is not yours to use;
- try to get around a per-connection limit or the scanner’s daily cap, for example by spreading requests across many connections;
- send the card scanner anything other than a photo of a card, such as a photo of a person or of a private document;
- try to break into, probe, overload or disrupt the site, its server or the services it runs on, or try to reach pages that are not public, such as the password-protected pages we use to run the site;
- use the site in a way that breaks the law, harms someone else or violates their rights.
Each service has limits of its own. The weekly brief signup accepts at most five signups an hour from one connection, and the card scanner allows a set number of scans per connection a minute, an hour and a day. We may block a connection, an address or a network that breaks these rules, without notice.
11. Our content and your feedback
The articles, reviews, rankings, tables, tools, code, illustrations and design of Rip.fan, and the Rip.fan name and logo, belong to Rip.fan or to those who license them to us, and copyright and other laws protect them. Apart from the use these terms allow, you may not copy, change or republish them without our written permission. Card data belongs to Scrydex and its sources, and card art to its rights holders (section 9).
If you send us a correction, a tip or an idea, you allow us to use it, in whole or in part, to improve Rip.fan, without paying you and without naming you. We do not publish your name or your email address without asking you first. Please do not send us anything confidential.
12. The weekly brief
The weekly brief is a free email of the week's Rip.fan stories: each story's title, a short description and a link to it on rip.fan. It goes out once a week, on Fridays, and a week with too few new stories may have no brief.
- You sign up with an email address that you are allowed to use. We send a confirmation link first, and your address joins the list only after you open it and confirm.
- Every weekly brief carries an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
- We can change the brief, send it less often, pause it or stop it.
- Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep and who sends the emails.
13. Disclaimers
We work to keep Rip.fan correct and up to date, and we correct the errors we find or that readers report. Even so, the site, its tools and the weekly brief are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promise, express or implied, that:
- any page, price, fee, card rate, score or tool result is complete, current or free of errors;
- the site or a tool will be available at any given time, or free of interruptions, faults or harmful code;
- a site we review, rank or link to will act as we describe, keep to its own terms, or deliver what you buy from it.
That includes any implied promise that the site is fit for a particular purpose, of satisfactory quality, or free of anything that violates someone else’s rights. Some places do not allow some of these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.
14. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- Rip.fan is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, money or opportunity, that comes from your use of the site, its tools or the weekly brief, or from relying on anything we publish.
- Rip.fan is not liable for anything a site we review, rank or link to does or fails to do, including anything you buy there.
- Our total liability to you for all claims about the site is limited to 100 US dollars.
Nothing in these terms limits a liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Nothing in them takes away your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.
15. Indemnity
If you break these terms or misuse the site, and someone makes a claim against Rip.fan because of it, you agree to cover the reasonable costs, losses and liabilities that result, including reasonable legal costs. This does not apply where the law where you live does not allow it.
16. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its rules on conflicts of law. Any dispute about these terms or the site that we cannot resolve together will be heard by the state or federal courts located in Delaware, and you and we agree to those courts’ jurisdiction.
If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom or another country whose laws protect consumers, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in its courts.
Before you start any formal claim, please write to us at editor@rip.fan, so that we can try to put things right first.
17. General terms
- The whole agreement. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, the Cookie Policy and the Affiliate Disclosure, are the whole agreement between you and Rip.fan about the site, and they replace any earlier version.
- Severability. If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, that part is changed only as far as needed to make it enforceable, and the rest of the terms stay in force.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer. We may transfer these terms, together with the site, to anyone who takes over Rip.fan. You may not transfer your rights under them.
- No partnership. Nothing in these terms makes you and Rip.fan partners, employees or agents of each other.
- Headings. The headings are there to help you read. They do not change what a section means.
18. Contact
Questions about these terms go to editor@rip.fan. To report an error on a page, use the Corrections page. For anything about your information, see the Privacy Policy.
