Modern Horizons 3 went on sale in stores on June 14, 2024, under the set code MH3. It mixes cards new to Magic with reprints from across its history, with the Eldrazi in a starring role. The set has 522 entries, which are 309 different cards on 491 collector numbers. What sets the numbering apart is how often a card repeats: 15 cards have four printings each, where no card in the earlier Outlaws of Thunder Junction has more than three.
When did Modern Horizons 3 come out?
| What | Date |
|---|---|
| Story card previews | May 13 to 17 |
| Debut stream and start of previews | May 21, 2024 |
| Card image gallery and previews complete | May 31 |
| Prerelease events begin | June 7 |
| Set release, in stores | June 14, 2024 |
Wizards files Modern Horizons 3 under Special Products rather than under Set Releases. By Rip.fan’s arithmetic it came 8 weeks after Outlaws of Thunder Junction (April 19, 2024) and 7 weeks before Bloomburrow (August 2, 2024), Wizards’ next set release.
Why does MH3 have 522 entries?
Thirty-one of the 491 collector numbers hold a card with two named faces, and each face gets its own entry: 491 plus 31 makes 522. Those 31 numbers hold 26 different cards:
- Five Mythic Rares, each a character on both faces, such as Ajani, Nacatl Pariah // Ajani, Nacatl Avenger at 237, one of the double-faced planeswalkers. Each has a second printing at 442 to 446.
- 21 Uncommons, at 196 and across 238 to 261, such as Razorgrass Ambush // Razorgrass Field at 238. Each has one printing.
When you look up one of these, search under both names.
How is Modern Horizons 3 numbered?
Collector numbers run from 1 to 496, with no entries at 468 to 472. They group like this:
| Collector numbers | Printings | What is there |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 261 | 261 | 261 different cards, from Breaker of Creation at 1 to Inundated Archive at 261 |
| 262 to 303 | 42 | 42 more different cards, from Angel of the Ruins to Phyrexian Tower |
| 304 to 308 | 5 | Basic lands, one of each type |
| 309 to 467 | 159 | Repeats only, including ten more basic lands (310 to 319) and Snow-Covered Wastes (229, 309 and 439) |
| 468 to 472 | 0 | No entries |
| 473 to 495 | 23 | More repeats, Emrakul, the World Anew among them |
| 496 | 1 | Flusterstorm, a Rare with no other printing |
Each Play Booster holds one card returning from Magic’s history, among them Laelia, the Blade Reforged and Priest of Titania. Those two sit at 281 and 286, inside the 262 to 303 run. That holds for those two cards only. Flusterstorm is the only card first numbered above the basic lands.
Which cards have the most printings?
191 cards have one printing, 69 have two, 34 have three and 15 have four. The 15 with four:
| Group | Cards | Their numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Five fetch lands | Flooded Strand (220), Polluted Delta (224), Bloodstained Mire (216), Wooded Foothills (236) and Windswept Heath (235) | First at the number shown; each again once in 352 to 361, once in 435 to 441 and once in 463 to 467 |
| Three cards first numbered 6, 10 and 15 | Emrakul, the World Anew; Kozilek, the Broken Reality; Ulamog, the Defiler | Emrakul at 6, 381, 384 and 473; Kozilek at 10, 382, 386 and 475; Ulamog at 15, 383, 389 and 476 |
| Seven more cards | Ashling, Flame Dancer; Eladamri, Korvecdal; Six; Imskir Iron-Eater; Kudo, King Among Bears; Rosheen, Roaring Prophet; Kaalia of the Vast | Each first numbered between 115 and 290, then three more times above 342 |
Emrakul comes in four versions, borderless concept, foil-etched, retro frame and serialized borderless concept, and the fetch lands in borderless, retro frame and extended-art versions. Match a card by its number before you compare prices.
What rarities are in Modern Horizons 3?
By rarity, with each card counted once at its first collector number:
| Rarity | Cards in MH3 | First numbered 1 to 261 | First numbered 262 to 303 | First numbered 304 to 496 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 80 | 80 | None | None |
| Uncommon | 121 | 101 | 20 | None |
| Rare | 79 | 60 | 18 | 1, Flusterstorm |
| Mythic Rare | 24 | 20 | 4 | None |
| Land | 5 | None | None | 5, the basics |
The second column adds up to 309, the number of different cards, so no card sits at two rarities. Our Magic card rarities guide shows each rarity symbol.
What special versions does Wizards name?
| Version | Where it comes | A card it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Borderless concept Eldrazi | Collector Boosters only; on three legendary Eldrazi | Emrakul, the World Anew |
| Serialized borderless concept | Collector Boosters of every language, printed in English, 250 copies of each | Emrakul, the World Anew |
| Foil-etched | Collector Boosters only | Emrakul, the World Anew |
| Textured foil | Collector Boosters, including the double-faced planeswalkers | Ajani, Nacatl Pariah |
| Frame break | No product named | Psychic Frog |
| Borderless profile | Returning from Commander Masters | Laelia, the Blade Reforged |

| Full-art Eldrazi basic lands | Named with the treatments in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters | Plains through Forest |
The serialized cards are serial-numbered, with 250 copies of each. Our Magic foil types guide explains foil-etched and textured foil.

What products came out for Modern Horizons 3?
- Collector Boosters, sold in a display. Across every set, a Collector Booster holds 5 to 6 cards of rare or higher and 8 to 10 foil cards or more.
- Play Boosters, sold in a display. Each holds one returning card, at least one card of rare or higher and at least one foil card. The February 2024 set (code MKM) was the first with Play Boosters.
- Bundle and Bundle: Gift Edition.
- Prerelease Pack.
- Commander Decks: four. Each also comes as a Collector’s Edition with the whole deck in a new foil treatment. The M3C set has 396 entries.
The Collector Booster entry and our Magic Collector Boosters guide explain that pack type.
What should you check before you buy?
- The code. MH3, M3C and SPG are separate lists, so a listing should give the code and the collector number.
- The printing. Fifteen cards have four printings, in several versions, so a card name alone does not pin down what you are buying.
- Serialized or not. A serialized concept Eldrazi is one of 250; check that the listing shows its number.
- Factory wrap. Any booster box is sealed product; our guide to storing sealed product explains how to keep it that way.
How do you check Modern Horizons 3 card prices?
Rip.fan’s card price lookup and price pages do not include Magic; they list English Pokémon cards only. For an MH3 card, start from the code and the collector number, then look only at sold listings for that exact printing and finish, and note the date of each sale. Our guides to checking Magic card prices and finding what a card sold for set out the method, and spotting fake Magic cards covers the checks before you pay.
The seller fee calculator shows what a sale leaves you after fees on TCGplayer or Whatnot. For the 2023 sets, see our guides to Wilds of Eldraine and The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, or the trading card hub.
