151, a special expansion of the Scarlet & Violet series, came out on September 22, 2023. Pokémon called it a first: an expansion with all 151 original Pokémon from the Kanto region, reimagined for the Scarlet & Violet series. The set has 207 cards. Cards 001 to 151 are those Pokémon in Pokédex order, 152 to 165 are Trainer cards, and 42 more are numbered above the printed total of 165. Its packs came in products like the Elite Trainer Box instead of booster displays.

When did the 151 set come out?

On September 22, 2023. Pokémon first showed the set on June 16, 2023, with a social media campaign called “151 to 151”, and on September 22 it reached stores worldwide. More products followed on October 6, 2023. The set’s code is MEW.

Japan had the set first. Pokémon Card 151 (SV2a), an enhanced expansion pack of 7 cards at a suggested ¥290, came out June 16, 2023. The Japanese and English sets have the same 12 Pokémon ex and a printed total of 165, though the Japanese set runs to 210 cards against 207. Our guide to Japanese Pokémon sets compares the pack formats.

How is the 151 set numbered?

In Pokédex order: 151 different Pokémon at numbers 001 to 151, one card each, from Bulbasaur at 001 to Mew ex at 151. So a Pokémon’s card number in the main list is its Pokédex number. Pikachu is 025, Snorlax 143 and Mewtwo 150.

After the Pokémon come 14 Trainer cards, 152 to 165, in alphabetical order from Antique Dome Fossil to Rigid Band.

Above 165, the cards run in blocks by rarity:

  • 166 to 181: illustration rares
  • 182 to 197: ultra rares
  • 198 to 204: special illustration rares
  • 205 to 207: hyper rares

What rarities are in 151?

Eight.

Rarity Mark Cards Numbers
Common Black circle 66 Within 001 to 154
Uncommon Black diamond 62 Within 002 to 165
Rare Black star 25 Within 015 to 150
Double rare Two black stars 12 Within 003 to 151
Illustration rare One gold star 16 166 to 181
Ultra rare Two silver stars, which Pokémon calls foil stars 16 182 to 197
Special illustration rare Two gold stars 7 198 to 204
Hyper rare Three gold stars 3 205 to 207

The 12 double rares are all Pokémon ex; the 16 ultra rares are full-art etched cards, Pokémon and Supporters; the 7 special illustration rares are Pokémon and Supporters; and the 3 hyper rares are gold etched cards.

Rip.fan’s page for 151 uses the same eight rarities, and our guide to Pokémon rarity symbols explains each mark.

Which Pokémon ex are in 151, and in which versions?

Twelve, each a double rare in the main list at its Pokédex number. All 12 come again as ultra rares, in the same order, and five have a special illustration rare. Only Mew ex has a hyper rare.

The other cards in those blocks are Supporters. Four of the 16 ultra rares are Supporters (Bill’s Transfer, Daisy’s Help, Erika’s Invitation and Giovanni’s Charisma), and two of the seven special illustration rares are Erika’s Invitation and Giovanni’s Charisma. The other two hyper rares are gold versions of Switch and Basic Psychic Energy.

What do the illustration rares show?

Sixteen Pokémon from the main list, drawn in full art. The set’s illustrators often follow one Pokémon through its Evolutions over a run of cards, across the whole list from 001 to 151 as well as the illustration rares. Examples are Naoyo Kimura’s Pikachu and Raichu, and Shinya Komatsu’s Cubone and Marowak.

The Kanto first partner lines show it most clearly. Each line’s two illustration rares and its special illustration rare are credited to one illustrator:

Line Illustration rares Special illustration rare Illustrator
Bulbasaur Bulbasaur 166, Ivysaur 167 Venusaur ex 198 Yoriyuki Ikegami
Charmander Charmander 168, Charmeleon 169 Charizard ex 199 miki kudo
Squirtle Squirtle 170, Wartortle 171 Blastoise ex 200 Mitsuhiro Arita

The other ten illustration rares, 172 to 181, run from Caterpie to Dragonair. Our guide to illustration rares sets 151’s counts beside other sets.

What products hold 151 packs?

Not a booster display. Most expansions sell packs in many ways, from booster displays to single sleeved packs, but packs of special expansions like 151 come in products such as the Elite Trainer Box and the Ultra-Premium Collection.

How do you check 151 card prices?

Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages include a page for 151 that lists its cards with number, rarity and NM market price. Sorting the set’s page by number puts it back in Pokédex order, and the rarity filter shows one block at a time, such as the 16 illustration rares. A search in the card price lookup by name or number shows the price and the printing it belongs to. Many 151 cards come in several printings: our guide to completing a Pokémon set lists five for Pikachu alone. Week-to-week moves appear on the price changes page.

Those figures are past prices for raw cards, not predictions. Thinking of grading a 151 card? Our guide to whether a card is worth grading sets out the costs, and the centering checker turns your border measurements into a split.

What should you check before buying?

  1. The Pokédex number. In the main list it should match the Pokémon’s Pokédex number. Above 165, check that the number falls in the right block for the rarity a listing claims.
  2. The language. The Japanese set also has a printed total of 165, so a Japanese card can carry a similar number. Our guide to Japanese and English cards shows how to tell them apart.
  3. Sealed product. No booster display was listed for 151, so treat a box sold under that name with care. Compare it with the product table, and read our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs.
  4. Fakes. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards explains checks that will not harm a card.
