Special illustration rare

A special illustration rare is a top Pokémon rarity, marked with two gold stars, where a Pokémon ex or Supporter gets full art with a scene around it. Collectors often treat them as a set's headline cards.

In more detail

The rarity arrived with the Scarlet & Violet set and sits above the illustration rare. Its cards are full-art Pokémon ex and some Supporter cards, and two gold stars mark them.

In a pack, a special illustration rare can replace the second reverse holofoil card. Like every card above the printed total, its number is higher than the set's count: Miraidon ex is numbered 244 in the first Scarlet & Violet set.

Count the stars to tell the two illustration tiers apart. One gold star is an illustration rare, and two is a special illustration rare, which is the tier that usually carries the higher price.
