Secret rare

A secret rare is a card numbered above its set's printed total, such as 101/100. It is usually a reprint of a card from the set with special artwork or a different foil finish.

Also called Secret card.

In more detail

Secret rares sit outside the numbered list: the first figure on the card is bigger than the second. The idea began with Dark Raichu in Team Rocket, a set of 82 cards, which has a card marked 83/82.

Most are reprints of cards from the same set with a finish of their own, such as an alternate foil pattern, a gold edge or a shiny version of the Pokémon. The Shining cards of the Neo era are examples.

Today the term mostly covers the top of a set, because illustration rares and special illustration rares take numbers above the printed total too. The number tells you a card is a secret rare, but the price follows which card it is and its condition, so read the number first and then the sold prices.
