Chilling Reign is an expansion in Pokémon’s Sword & Shield series, released June 18, 2021. It introduced Calyrex in two forms, Ice Rider and Shadow Rider, each as a Pokémon V and a Pokémon VMAX, alongside Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos and Galarian Moltres. The set has 233 cards: 198 inside the printed total and 35 numbered above it.

When did Chilling Reign come out?

On June 18, 2021. Pokémon announced the set on March 31, 2021 for release around the world on that day, and on June 18 the set was out at participating retailers around the world. On Pokémon’s schedule of card products, the next card set after it is Evolving Skies, dated August 27, 2021.

Rip.fan’s price pages give it the code CRE. Pokémon V and VMAX cards date from the Sword & Shield expansion and VSTAR cards from Brilliant Stars, released February 25, 2022, so Chilling Reign has V and VMAX cards but no VSTAR. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the series in the longer history.

How many cards are in Chilling Reign?

  1. The first 159 numbers are the main run, before the ultra rare block: cards 001 to 128 are Pokémon, 129 to 156 are Trainer cards and 157 to 159 are Special Energy cards. The tiers run like this, with the Holo Rare V and Holo Rare VMAX tiers shown as Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX:
Tier Cards Numbers What they are
Common 43 Within 001 to 127 Pokémon
Uncommon 46 Within 002 to 159 15 Pokémon, the 28 Trainer cards and the 3 Special Energy
Rare 23 Within 010 to 122 Pokémon
Holo rare 24 Within 003 to 128 Pokémon
Pokémon V 15 Within 007 to 124 One card each for 15 Pokémon
Pokémon VMAX 8 Within 008 to 125 One card each for 8 Pokémon
Ultra rare 39 160 to 198 26 full-art Pokémon V and 13 full-art Supporters
Secret rare 35 199 to 233 11 VMAX, 12 Supporters, 3 other Pokémon, 6 other Trainer cards and 3 Energy cards

The marks for the first three tiers are a black circle for common, a black diamond for uncommon and a black star for rare. A card numbered above the printed total is a secret rare. Unlike Fusion Strike, Chilling Reign repeats no card name inside the main run: every repeated name involves a card numbered 160 or higher.

Which cards does each VMAX Pokémon have?

Eight Pokémon have a VMAX, and each also has a Pokémon V in the main run and at least one full-art V. The two Calyrex forms and Blaziken also have a second VMAX artwork above 198:

Pokémon Pokémon V Full-art V VMAX Above 198
Celebi 007 160 008 199
Blaziken 020 161 021 200, 201
Ice Rider Calyrex 045 163, 164 046 202, 203
Shadow Rider Calyrex 074 171, 172 075 204, 205
Sandaconda 089 175 090 206
Galarian Slowking 099 178, 179 100 207
Metagross 112 181 113 208
Tornadus 124 184, 185 125 209

So each Calyrex form has six cards, and Galarian Slowking reaches six as well when its holo rare at 098, which is not a V card, is counted. No Pokémon in the set has more.

Where are the Galarian birds?

In the main run and the full-art block, never above 198. Galarian Articuno V is 058, 169 and 170, Galarian Zapdos V is 080, 173 and 174, and Galarian Moltres V is 097, 176 and 177. None of the three has a VMAX here. The same three Pokémon V turn up again in Brilliant Stars, where they appear only as gold cards, at 181 to 183.

Which Pokémon V have two full-art cards?

Ten: Ice Rider Calyrex (163, 164), Zeraora (165, 166), Galarian Rapidash (167, 168), Galarian Articuno (169, 170), Shadow Rider Calyrex (171, 172), Galarian Zapdos (173, 174), Galarian Moltres (176, 177), Galarian Slowking (178, 179), Blissey (182, 183) and Tornadus (184, 185). The two cards of every pair have different illustrators, so each pair reads as alternate art versions of one card.

Galarian Rapidash V stands apart: it has no card in the main run, so both of its cards are full-art ultra rares. Celebi, Blaziken, Volcanion, Sandaconda, Liepard and Metagross each have a single full-art V.

What sits above 198?

Thirty-five cards, in three blocks:

  1. 199 to 209, VMAX. There is one rainbow card for each of the eight VMAX. The other three are second artworks of Blaziken (201), Ice Rider Calyrex (203) and Shadow Rider Calyrex (205), each by a different illustrator from that Pokémon’s main-run VMAX and its rainbow card.
  2. 210 to 221, rainbow Supporters. Rainbow versions of 12 of the 13 full-art Supporters. Honey, at 192, is the one without.
  3. 222 to 233, gold. Electrode, Bronzong and Snorlax, six Trainer cards (five Items and a Tool) and three basic Energy cards. Electrode, Bronzong and Snorlax have no other card in the set.

Rainbow rare and gold rare cards are both kinds of secret rare. A Snorlax numbered 224/198 is Chilling Reign’s gold Snorlax: the only other set with a printed total of 198 is Scarlet & Violet, and its card 224 is Arcanine ex.

What products hold Chilling Reign packs?

Beyond the two Elite Trainer Box versions, the set came in booster packs and special collections. For pack counts and contents, check the printed contents on the box or the seller’s listing. Our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes, booster boxes and Pokémon sealed products explain the formats. For a box from 2021, our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs covers what to look at.

How do you check Chilling Reign card prices?

Chilling Reign has its own page in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, listing its cards with number, rarity and NM market price. Sort it by number and each Calyrex form’s cards line up with the table above, Shadow Rider Calyrex at 074, 075, 171, 172, 204 and 205. For one card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing a price is for, and the price changes page compares prices between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.

If you plan to grade, our guide to deciding whether to grade a card covers the costs, and the centering checker turns border measurements into a centering split.

What should you check before buying?

  1. The number. Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX is three cards (046, 202 and 203). Match the card number to the version a listing describes.
  2. Rainbow or second artwork. For Blaziken and both Calyrex forms, the lower number above 198 is the rainbow card and the higher one the second artwork.
  3. Which full art. The ten Pokémon V with two full-art cards credit a different illustrator on each card, so check the picture as well as the name.
  4. The finish. Every main-run card except the 23 Pokémon V and VMAX has a reverse holofoil version, and two have a cosmos-pattern holo version: Galarian Slowking (098) and the Supporter Klara (145).
  5. Genuine cards. See our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards, and our guide to Pokémon card finishes for how foils differ.

The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guides to Shining Fates, Evolving Skies and Fusion Strike cover more Sword & Shield sets the same way.
