Shining Fates is a special expansion in Pokémon’s Sword & Shield series, released February 19, 2021. It comes in two lists: a main list of 73 cards, numbered to 72 with one more at 073, and the Shiny Vault, a subset of 122 cards numbered SV001 to SV122. Pokémon announced the set would feature more than 100 Shiny Pokémon on etched cards, among them nine Shiny Pokémon V and seven Shiny VMAX, and the vault’s V and VMAX block matches those two counts exactly. The two lists overlap little: only 24 of the 122 vault cards share a name with a card in the main list.

When did Shining Fates come out?

On February 19, 2021. Pokémon announced it on December 3, 2020 as a special expansion available around the world from that date, and its launch notice of February 19 said it was out at participating retailers. Two products came later: the Mini Tins and the Premium Collections, on March 5, 2021.

The set was inspired by Hidden Fates, a 2019 expansion that has a Shiny Vault list of its own on Rip.fan’s price pages. Rip.fan’s price pages give both Shining Fates lists the code SHF. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the Sword & Shield series in the longer history.

What is in the main list?

Seventy-three cards. Cards 001 to 056 are Pokémon and 057 to 063 are Trainer cards. Then come Alcremie V at 064 and eight Supporters at 065 to 072, with Alcremie VMAX at 073, the only card above the printed total. By tier, with Holo Rare V and Holo Rare VMAX shown as Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX:

Tier Cards Numbers What they are
Common 18 Within 001 to 052 Pokémon
Uncommon 13 Within 005 to 063 8 Pokémon and 5 Trainer cards
Rare 10 Within 002 to 060 8 Pokémon and 2 Supporters
Holo rare 5 Within 030 to 056 Pokémon
Amazing rare 3 017, 021, 046 Reshiram, Kyogre and Yveltal
Pokémon V 7 Within 018 to 054 One card each for 7 Pokémon
Pokémon VMAX 5 Within 019 to 055 One card each for 5 Pokémon
Ultra rare 11 009, 010 and 064 to 072 Dhelmise V and VMAX, Alcremie V and 8 Supporters
Secret rare 1 073 Alcremie VMAX, in rainbow foil

A black circle marks a common, a black diamond an uncommon and a black star a rare. The three Amazing rares are the ones Pokémon announced as “three more Amazing Pokémon”, following the six in Vivid Voltage. Unlike Vivid Voltage, Chilling Reign or Fusion Strike, the main list has no block of full-art Pokémon V, and the V and VMAX cards of Dhelmise (009, 010) and Alcremie (064) are ultra rare in the middle of the numbering.

What is the Shiny Vault?

A subset of 122 cards with their own SV numbers, 120 of them in the Shiny rare tiers. The vault holds no Trainer or Energy cards. It runs in three parts:

Numbers Cards What they are
SV001 to SV104 104 Pokémon that are not V or VMAX, from Rowlet to Dubwool
SV105 to SV120 16 9 Pokémon V and 7 Pokémon VMAX
SV121 and SV122 2 Eternatus V and Eternatus VMAX

The first two parts are filed under Shiny rare tiers and the two Eternatus cards as secret rares; those are labels, and the Shiny cards have no rarity of their own. Every vault card is holo only.

How are the 104 regular vault cards ordered?

In blocks by type, in the same order as the main list’s Pokémon from 001 to 056, starting with Grass at SV001 and ending with Colorless at SV104:

Numbers Cards First and last card
SV001 to SV014 14 Rowlet to Appletun
SV015 to SV019 5 Scorbunny to Centiskorch
SV020 to SV037 18 Galarian Mr. Mime to Arctovish
SV038 to SV046 9 Rotom to Arctozolt
SV047 to SV062 16 Galarian Ponyta to Dragapult
SV063 to SV075 13 Galarian Farfetch’d to Stonjourner
SV076 to SV085 10 Koffing to Grimmsnarl
SV086 to SV092 7 Galarian Meowth to Duraludon
SV093 to SV104 12 Minccino to Dubwool

Which V and VMAX cards are in the vault?

Pokémon Pokémon V Pokémon VMAX
Rillaboom SV105 SV106
Charizard None SV107
Centiskorch SV108 SV109
Lapras SV110 SV111
Toxtricity SV112 SV113
Indeedee SV114 None
Falinks SV115 None
Grimmsnarl SV116 SV117
Ditto SV118 SV119
Dubwool SV120 None
Eternatus SV121 SV122

Charizard VMAX at SV107 is the Shiny Charizard VMAX that Pokémon’s announcement singled out, and it is the only Charizard card in either list.

How many Pokémon V and VMAX cards does the set have?

Across both lists the set has 34 Pokémon V and VMAX cards: 16 in the main list and 18 in the vault. The nine V and seven VMAX Shiny cards are exactly the cards at SV105 to SV120, so Eternatus V and VMAX at SV121 and SV122 come on top of those.

How much of the vault repeats the main list?

Little. Only 24 of the 122 vault cards share a name with a main-list card, among them the Rowlet, Grookey and Chewtle lines. Three of the 24 are V or VMAX cards: Ditto V and VMAX (050 and 051 in the main list, SV118 and SV119 in the vault) and Indeedee V (039 and SV114). Charizard VMAX and both Eternatus cards appear only in the vault, while Dhelmise, Cinderace, Morpeko, Crobat, Greedent, Cramorant and Alcremie have V cards only in the main list. Our guide to completing a Pokémon set shows how to check for subset pages like this one.

What products held Shining Fates packs?

Pokémon lists no booster box. Its products, from the most packs to the fewest:

Product On sale Packs Also inside
Elite Trainer Box February 19, 2021 10 Foil Eevee VMAX promo and accessories
Premium Collections, Shiny Crobat or Shiny Dragapult March 5, 2021 7 Foil promo of that Shiny V, foil and oversize promos of its Shiny VMAX, and a matching small accessory
Tins February 19, 2021 6 in the US tins Foil promo of Eldegoss V, Boltund V or Cramorant V

Mad Party Pin Collections February 19, 2021 3 Foil promo of Bunnelby, Dedenne, Galarian Mr. Rime or Polteageist, and a matching pin
Mini Tins March 5, 2021 2 A small accessory

Neither list has an Eevee VMAX, a Pikachu V or a Dragapult V or VMAX, so those promos sit outside the set’s lists. Our guide to Pokémon promo cards explains how promos are marked and numbered, and our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes and Pokémon sealed products compare the formats.

How do you check Shining Fates card prices?

The two lists have separate pages in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, one for the main list and one named Shining Fates Shiny Vault, each with number, rarity and NM market price. Sort the vault page by number to follow the blocks above. For one card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing a price is for, and the price changes page compares prices between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.

These are past raw-card prices, and they say nothing about where prices go. If you plan to grade, our guide to deciding whether to grade a card covers the costs.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Main list or vault. Ditto VMAX is 051 in the main list and SV119 in the vault. Match the card number, including its SV prefix, to the card a listing describes.
  2. Which vault. Rip.fan’s pages print a Shining Fates vault number out of SV122, such as SV107/SV122, and a Hidden Fates vault number out of SV94, such as SV49/SV94.
  3. The finish. Every main-list card from 001 to 063 has a reverse holofoil version except the V, VMAX, Amazing rare and ultra rare cards, and the Professor’s Research Supporter at 060 also comes in a cosmos-pattern holo version.
  4. Sealed product and genuine cards. See our guides to spotting resealed Pokémon packs and spotting fake Pokémon cards.

The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage. Our Paldean Fates guide compares how the three Fates sets number their Shiny cards, and our guides to Vivid Voltage and Chilling Reign cover the sets around this one.
