Hidden Fates is a special expansion from Pokémon’s Sun & Moon series, released August 23, 2019, and it comes in two lists. The main list has 69 cards, 68 inside the printed total and 1 above it. The Shiny Vault adds 94 more, numbered SV1 to SV94, most of them Pokémon in their Shiny forms. The set introduced the first TAG TEAM trio card, Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX.

When did Hidden Fates come out?

On August 23, 2019. Pokémon announced the set in June 2019, saying the first wave of products would arrive from August 23.

It sits in the Sun & Moon series between Unified Minds, released August 2, 2019, and Cosmic Eclipse, released November 1, 2019. Rip.fan gives the main list the code HIF and keeps the Shiny Vault on a page of its own. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the Sun & Moon series in the longer history.

How many cards are in the Hidden Fates main list?

69:

Numbers Cards What they are
1 to 50 50 Pokémon, including nine Pokémon-GX cards
51 to 65 15 Trainer cards: 13 Supporters and 2 Stadiums
66 to 68 3 Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX, Giovanni’s Exile and Jessie & James, labeled ultra rares on Rip.fan’s page
69 1 Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX again, labeled a rainbow rare on Rip.fan’s page

Every Pokémon in the 68-card main run is one of the first 151 by national number, and the Trainer cards carry the names of characters such as Brock, Misty, Erika, Sabrina, Blaine and Giovanni. Card 69 is the main list’s one secret rare, a card numbered higher than the set number.

Rip.fan’s price page sorts the main list into seven labels:

Label on Rip.fan’s page Cards Numbers
Common 18 Within 1 to 49
Uncommon 17 Within 2 to 65
Rare 15 Within 3 to 56
Rare Holo 6 Vaporeon 18, Zapdos 24, Eevee 48 and three Supporters at 55, 58 and 63
Rare Holo GX 9 6, 9, 14, 16, 20, 31, 36, 42 and 44
Rare Ultra 3 66 to 68
Rare Rainbow 1 69

In CGC’s guide, a black star marks a rare, a black diamond an uncommon and a black circle a common card, and its list of other card types includes TAG TEAM and Shiny Vault cards.

Which names appear more than once?

Six. Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX, the headline trio card, has three cards, at 44, 66 and 69. Giovanni’s Exile appears at 57 and 67, and Jessie & James at 58 and 68. Three Pokémon have two different cards each: Ekans at 25 and 26, Clefairy at 38 and 39, and Eevee at 48 and 49. The other eight Pokémon-GX, from Pinsir-GX at 6 to Wigglytuff-GX at 42, have one card each in the main list.

What is in the Hidden Fates Shiny Vault?

94 cards numbered SV1 to SV94, which have their own Hidden Fates Shiny Vault page on Rip.fan.

Numbers Cards What they are Label on Rip.fan’s page
SV1 to SV45 45 Shiny Pokémon that are not GX, from Scyther to Type: Null Rare Shiny
SV46 to SV80 35 Shiny Pokémon-GX, from Leafeon-GX to Drampa-GX Rare Shiny GX
SV81 to SV86 6 Supporters, including Cynthia and Guzma Rare Ultra
SV87 to SV90 4 Stadiums Rare Secret
SV91 to SV94 4 Tapu Bulu-GX, Tapu Fini-GX, Tapu Koko-GX and Tapu Lele-GX Rare Secret

The two lists barely overlap. Only seven names appear in both: Scyther, Charmander, Charmeleon, Voltorb, Eevee, Charizard-GX and Mewtwo-GX. Pokémon named the Shiny Charizard-GX at SV49 and Shiny Mewtwo-GX at SV59 as its two Shiny examples.

The vault also reaches well beyond the first 151. Of its 84 Pokémon cards, 71 show species numbered above 151, so most Shiny Vault Pokémon have no card at all in the main list. Lycanroc-GX is the only name the vault repeats, at SV66 and SV67.

What products held Hidden Fates packs?

Pokémon’s two US notices list five products. Neither lists a booster box:

Product Date in the US Packs Other contents
Pin Collection August 23, 2019 3 One of two foil promo cards, Mewtwo or Mew, and a matching pin
Tin September 6, 2019 4 A foil Pokémon-GX card of Charizard, Gyarados or Raichu, one per tin
Elite Trainer Box September 20, 2019 10 A full-art foil promo of Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX, card sleeves, a guide and other small accessories

In the US, the Poké Ball Collection was set for October 4, 2019 and the Ultra-Premium Collection for November 15, 2019.

The Pin Collection was the first product of the set.

The cards in the Pin Collection and the Elite Trainer Box are promo cards, and our guide to Pokémon promo cards explains how promos are numbered. Match the number on a listing to the set’s Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX cards at 44, 66 and 69 before treating it as one of them. Check the wrapper for how many cards each booster pack held. For how recent products are laid out, see our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes and Pokémon sealed products.

How does Hidden Fates compare with the later Fates sets?

Pokémon’s Paldean Fates notice of November 16, 2023 said that set took inspiration from Hidden Fates and Shining Fates. Rip.fan’s price pages show how the numbering changed:

Set Released Main list Shiny cards
Hidden Fates August 23, 2019 69 cards 94 in a separate Shiny Vault, SV1 to SV94
Shining Fates February 19, 2021 73 cards 122 in a separate Shiny Vault, SV001 to SV122
Paldean Fates January 26, 2024 245 cards In the same 245-card list, with no vault page on Rip.fan

The number format tells the two vaults apart. Hidden Fates vault numbers have no leading zeros, as in SV49/SV94, and Shining Fates vault numbers have three digits, as in SV001/SV122.

How do you check Hidden Fates card prices?

Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages give Hidden Fates two pages, one for the main list and one for the Shiny Vault, each listing priced cards with number, rarity and NM market price. On the vault page, filter by Rare Shiny GX to see the 35 Pokémon-GX, or sort by card number to follow the blocks in order. For a single card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing each price is for, and the price changes page shows moves between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.

Our guide to completing a Pokémon set explains why to check for a subset page such as a Shiny Vault.

What should you check before buying a Hidden Fates card?

  1. Main list or vault. Charizard-GX appears at 9/68 and again, in its Shiny form, at SV49/SV94. The card number is the quickest way to tell them apart.
  2. Which vault. An SV number with three digits belongs to Shining Fates.
  3. The trio card. Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX has three set cards and an Elite Trainer Box promo, so match the number to the listing. CGC’s guide says a promo card carries a black star with the word PROMO.
  4. Sealed product from 2019. Check any sealed tin, collection or box against our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs before buying.
  5. Genuine cards. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards walks through checks that leave a card unharmed.

The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guides to the Sword & Shield base set and Darkness Ablaze cover two sets that came out after it.
