Paldean Fates: the Pokémon set explained
Pokémon's Paldean Fates set: its 245 cards, 132 of them Shiny rares or Shiny ultra rares, every rarity and number, and the products that held its packs.
By the Rip.fan Editorial Team.
Published 8 min readPaldean Fates is a special expansion in Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet series, released January 26, 2024. It brought back Shiny Pokémon, shown in colors that differ from their usual ones, with two rarities of their own: Shiny rare and Shiny ultra rare. The set has 245 cards, and only 91 of them sit inside the printed total. The other 154 are numbered above it, more than three in every five, and 132 of those carry a Shiny rarity. As a special expansion it came in boxes, tins and collections, with no booster display.
When did Paldean Fates come out?
On January 26, 2024. Pokémon announced it on November 16, 2023, calling it a new special expansion. Some products came later: three on February 9 and the Booster Bundle on February 23, 2024. Its code is PAF on Rip.fan’s price page. It followed Paradox Rift, released November 3, 2023, and came before Temporal Forces, released March 22, 2024.
In Japan, a Shiny-themed set came first. Shiny Treasure ex (シャイニートレジャーex, SV4a), a high class pack of 10 cards, went on sale December 1, 2023, before Paldean Fates.
How does it compare with Hidden Fates and Shining Fates?
Paldean Fates took its inspiration from those two sets. The Shiny Pokémon of Shining Fates sat in a Shiny Vault without a rarity of their own. Rip.fan’s price pages show the difference in numbering:
| Set | Released | Main list | Shiny cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden Fates | August 23, 2019 | 69 cards | 94 in a separate Shiny Vault, SV1 to SV94 |
| Shining Fates | February 19, 2021 | 73 cards | 122 in a separate Shiny Vault, SV001 to SV122 |
| Paldean Fates | January 26, 2024 | 245 cards | 132 with a Shiny rarity, numbered 092 to 223 in the main list |
So a Paldean Fates Shiny card carries a plain number above 091 with no SV prefix, and appears on the same Rip.fan page as the rest of the set.
How many cards are in Paldean Fates?
- Cards 001 to 075 are Pokémon and 076 to 091 are Trainer cards. Everything from 092 to 226 is a Pokémon card.
| Rarity | Mark | Cards | Numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | Black circle | 40 | Within 001 to 089 |
| Uncommon | Black diamond | 25 | Within 008 to 091 |
| Rare | Black star | 16 | Within 010 to 088 |
| Double rare | Two black stars | 10 | Within 002 to 075 |

How do the announced figures compare with the list?
The 10 double rares are made up of 7 plus 3 Pokémon ex, and the three Tera Pokémon, Charizard, Forretress and Espathra, have double rares at 054, 002 and 006. Pokémon spoke of more than 130 Shiny Pokémon, and the Shiny rares and Shiny ultra rares alone come to 132. All 12 Shiny ultra rares are Pokémon ex.
- Most Shiny rares have no regular version in the set. Only 33 of the 120 share a name with a card in 001 to 091.
- The 5 ultra rares are all Supporters: Clive, Judge, Nemona and two cards named Paldean Student, at 230 and 231. The card comes in two illustrations, one for each academy’s students.
Rip.fan’s page for Paldean Fates uses the same ten rarities, and our guide to Pokémon rarity symbols explains the standard marks.

- The six hyper rare Pokémon ex appear nowhere else in the set.

The three illustration rares are Wugtrio, Palafin and Pawmi, all featuring Shiny Pokémon. The eight special illustration rares are Mew ex, Gardevoir ex and Charizard ex in a Shiny crystalline look, plus five Supporters: Arven, Clive, Iono, Nemona and Penny. The same illustrator, aspara, drew three of those Supporters: Arven, Nemona and Penny. Our guide to illustration rares sets the counts beside other sets.

That puts the dated products in three waves, starting January 26. To see how many cards each booster pack holds, check the wrapper. Our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes and sealed products set these formats beside other sets, and our Pokémon Center exclusives guide covers boxes like the 11-pack version.
How do you check Paldean Fates card prices?
Paldean Fates has its own page in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, listing all its cards, Shiny ones included, with number, rarity and NM market price. Filter it by Shiny rare or Shiny ultra rare to see one block at a time, or sort it by number to see Gardevoir ex’s three cards at 029, 217 and 233. For a single card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing each price is for, and the price changes page shows moves between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.
If you plan to grade, our guide to whether a card is worth grading covers the costs, and the centering checker turns border measurements into a centering split.
What should you check before buying?
- Shiny or not. Many Pokémon appear twice, once in 001 to 091 and once as a Shiny rare above it. Check the mark at the bottom left and the card number.
- The set. An SV-prefixed number, such as SV49/SV94, marks a Shiny Vault card from an older set such as Hidden Fates or Shining Fates.
- The language. Japanese sets, Shiny Treasure ex among them, are numbered on their own. Our Japanese and English cards guide explains the differences.
- The product. Pokémon lists no booster display for the set, so match a sealed item to one of the seven products in the table, and see our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs.
- Genuine cards. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards walks through checks that leave a card unharmed.
The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guides to Surging Sparks, Journey Together and the Mega Evolution set cover more sets the same way.
