Team Up: the Pokémon set explained
Pokémon's Team Up from February 2019: the first TAG TEAM cards, its 196-card list block by block, and where each of its 12 GX names sits.
By the Rip.fan Editorial Team.
Published 7 min readTeam Up is an expansion in Pokémon’s Sun & Moon series, released February 1, 2019, and the set where TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards began. A TAG TEAM card shows two Pokémon paired on one card, such as Pikachu & Zekrom-GX. The set has 196 cards: 181 numbered up to the printed total and 15 above it.
When did Team Up come out?
On February 1, 2019. Pokémon announced the set on December 7, 2018, naming that date. At launch the set was out worldwide, with booster packs and special collections among the products.
Team Up follows Lost Thunder of November 2, 2018. Unbroken Bonds followed on May 3, 2019, with an 18-card set between them. Team Up’s code is TEU. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the Sun & Moon series in the longer history, and our guides to the Sun & Moon base set and Ultra Prism cover two earlier sets in the series.
How many cards are in Team Up?
- The number blocks run like this:
| Numbers | Cards | What they are |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 132 | 132 | Pokémon, including 5 TAG TEAM cards, 6 Pokémon-GX and 2 Prism Star cards |
| 133 to 158 | 26 | Trainer cards: 11 Supporters, 6 Items, 5 Tools and 4 Stadiums |
| 159 to 171 | 13 | Second versions of TAG TEAM and Pokémon-GX cards, labeled Rare Ultra on Rip.fan’s page |
| 172 to 181 | 10 | Second versions of ten Supporters, also labeled Rare Ultra |
| 182 to 191 | 10 | TAG TEAM and Pokémon-GX cards labeled Rare Rainbow |
| 192 to 196 | 5 | Four Items and a Tool, labeled Rare Secret |
The set has no Energy cards. Everything from 159 on repeats a name from earlier in the list, with one exception covered below. Only the last 15 carry a number above 181, which makes them secret rares: cards numbered higher than the set number.
How many cards of each rarity?
The tiers count like this:
| Tier | Cards | Where they sit |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 45 | Within 2 to 125 |
| Uncommon | 48 | Within 4 to 157 |
| Rare | 54 | Within 5 to 158; 19 of them carry the label Rare Holo and 4 carry Rare Prism Star on Rip.fan’s price pages |
| Ultra Rare | 34 | The 11 TAG TEAM and Pokémon-GX cards of the main run, plus 159 to 181 |
| Secret Rare | 15 | 182 to 196 |
The small symbol beside a card’s number marks its tier: a black star for a rare, a black diamond for an uncommon and a black circle for a common. Pokémon-GX cards date to the Sun & Moon expansion, and Tag Team and Prism Star cards are among the special Pokémon card types. A Prism Star card carries a ◇ after its name.
What does the set hold, card by card?
In December and February, Pokémon gave the same five figures, and the card list bears out each one:
| Pokémon’s figure | On the list |
|---|---|
| Over 180 cards | 196: 181 inside the printed total and 15 above it |
| More than 25 Trainer cards | 26, at 133 to 158 |
| Four Prism Star cards | 4: Shaymin at 10, Tapu Koko at 51 and two Stadiums at 134 and 158 |
| 6 further Pokémon-GX | 6: Ampharos, Mr. Mime, Lycanroc, Hoopa, Incineroar and Cobalion |
| 6 new TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX | 6 names, though only 5 have a card in the main run |
All five match. Pokémon named Eevee & Snorlax-GX and Pikachu & Zekrom-GX among the TAG TEAM cards, and Lycanroc-GX, Hoopa-GX and Cobalion-GX among the others. All of them are on the list.
Where does each TAG TEAM and Pokémon-GX card sit?
The 12 names sit across the main run, the Rare Ultra block and the Rare Rainbow block like this:
| Name | Main run | Rare Ultra, 159 to 171 | Rare Rainbow, 182 to 191 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celebi & Venusaur-GX | 1 | 159 | 182 |
| Pikachu & Zekrom-GX | 33 | 162 | 184 |
| Gengar & Mimikyu-GX | 53 | 164 and 165 | 186 |
| Latias & Latios-GX | 113 | 169 and 170 | 190 |
| Eevee & Snorlax-GX | 120 | 171 | 191 |
| Magikarp & Wailord-GX | None | 160 and 161 | 183 |
| Ampharos-GX | 43 | 163 | 185 |
| Hoopa-GX, Incineroar-GX, Cobalion-GX | 96, 97, 106 | 166, 167, 168 | 187, 188, 189 |
| Mr. Mime-GX, Lycanroc-GX | 67, 82 | None | None |
Four patterns stand out:
- Magikarp & Wailord-GX skips the main run. It is the only one of the 12 names with no card from 1 to 158. Its three cards all sit in the higher blocks.
- Three TAG TEAM cards have two Rare Ultra versions. Gengar & Mimikyu-GX, Latias & Latios-GX and Magikarp & Wailord-GX each have a pair. The second card of each pair, at 161, 165 and 170, is by a different illustrator from the first, and every other card from 159 to 171 is by 5ban Graphics.
- Two Pokémon-GX have one card. Mr. Mime-GX at 67 and Lycanroc-GX at 82 have no card in the Rare Ultra block at 159 to 171 or the Rare Rainbow block at 182 to 191.
- One illustrator for the main-run TAG TEAM cards. All five, from Celebi & Venusaur-GX at 1 to Eevee & Snorlax-GX at 120, are by Mitsuhiro Arita.
Pikachu & Zekrom-GX came back in 2026: our guide to the 30th Celebration set lists Team Up’s 33/181 among the 30 classic cards that set reprints.
Which Supporters have a second version?
Ten of the 11 Supporters in the main run appear again at 172 to 181: Brock’s Grit, Dana, Erika’s Hospitality, Evelyn, Ingo & Emmet, Jasmine, Morgan, Nanu, Nita and Sabrina’s Suggestion. Bill’s Analysis at 133 is the only one without a second version. The five Rare Secret cards at 192 to 196 each repeat an Item or Tool from the main run, so every card above 181 except Magikarp & Wailord-GX at 183 has a card of the same name inside the main run.

What products held Team Up packs?
Check the wrapper for how many cards each booster pack held. For how recent products are laid out, see our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes and Pokémon sealed products. Our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs covers the signs of a pack that was opened and sealed again.
How do you check Team Up card prices?
Team Up has its own page in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, under the Sun & Moon series heading. It lists each priced card with its number, rarity and NM market price. Filter it by Rare Holo GX to see the 11 TAG TEAM and Pokémon-GX cards of the main run, or by Rare Rainbow to see the ten at 182 to 191. Sort it by card number to follow Latias & Latios-GX from 113 to 169, 170 and 190.
For a single card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing each price is for, and the price changes page shows moves between Rip.fan’s weekly checks. If you plan to grade a card, our guide to whether a card is worth grading covers the costs, and the centering checker turns border measurements into a centering split.
What should you check before buying a Team Up card?
- The number. Gengar & Mimikyu-GX and Latias & Latios-GX have four cards each, so the card number is the quickest way to tell 164 from 165 or 169 from 170.
- The block. A number from 159 to 181 is a Rare Ultra card, and a number above 181 is a Rare Rainbow or Rare Secret card on Rip.fan’s page. Our guide to Pokémon card finishes explains holofoil, reverse holo and full art.
- The set name with the number. Match both to the listing, since Pikachu & Zekrom-GX also has cards at 162 and 184 in Team Up, and our 30th Celebration guide lists a reprint of 33/181.
- Sealed product from 2019. Check any sealed pack or box against our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs before buying.
- Genuine cards. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards walks through checks that leave a card unharmed.
The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guides to Unified Minds and Cosmic Eclipse cover two later sets from 2019.
