Lost Origin is an expansion in Pokémon’s Sword & Shield series, released September 9, 2022. Pokémon tied it to the Hisui region and its Hisuian Pokémon, and its notices say some cards, Giratina VSTAR among them, show a shadowy aura coming from the artwork. The set comes in two lists: a main list of 217 cards, 196 inside the printed total and 21 above it, and a Trainer Gallery of 30 cards numbered TG01 to TG30. Every count in Pokémon’s notices matches the lists once the cards are counted by name.

When did Lost Origin come out?

On September 9, 2022. Pokémon announced it on June 23, 2022 with that date, and its launch notice of September 9 said it was out at participating retailers around the world.

Rip.fan’s price pages give both lists the code LOR. Among Rip.fan’s Sword & Shield sets it comes after Pokémon GO, released July 1, 2022, and before Silver Tempest, released November 11, 2022. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the series in the longer history.

How many cards are in Lost Origin?

217 in the main list, plus the 30-card Trainer Gallery. In the main list, cards 001 to 151 are Pokémon, 152 to 170 are Trainer cards and 171 is a Special Energy card. Counted by tier, with the V, VMAX and VSTAR cards sorted by name:

Tier Cards Numbers What they are
Common 49 Within 001 to 150 Pokémon
Uncommon 50 Within 002 to 171 31 Pokémon, 18 Trainer cards and the Special Energy
Rare 28 Within 005 to 151 Pokémon
Holo rare 22 Within 003 to 169 21 Pokémon and one Supporter, Volo
Radiant rare 3 069, 123, 124 Radiant Gardevoir, Radiant Hisuian Sneasler, Radiant Steelix
Pokémon V 12 Within 027 to 146 One card each for 12 Pokémon
Pokémon VMAX 1 049 Kyurem VMAX
Pokémon VSTAR 6 Within 057 to 147 One card each for 6 Pokémon
Ultra rare 25 172 to 196 17 Pokémon V and 8 Supporters
Secret rare 21 197 to 217 9 VMAX and VSTAR cards, 8 Supporters and 4 other Trainer cards

A black circle marks a common, a black diamond an uncommon and a black star a rare, and VSTAR cards begin with Brilliant Stars, the set that introduced them. Radiant Pokémon show Shiny Pokémon in etched artwork. A card numbered above the printed total is a secret rare.

Which Radiant, V, VSTAR and VMAX cards does Lost Origin have?

Card group Count Where they sit
Radiant Pokémon 3 069, 123 and 124
Pokémon VSTAR 6 names Each with a main-run card
Pokémon V 14 names 12 with a main-run card, plus Hisuian Electrode V and Gallade V
Pokémon VMAX 1 Kyurem VMAX
Trainer Gallery cards 30 TG01 to TG30

Hisuian Electrode V (172) and Gallade V (181) have no card in the main run, only an ultra rare, and Gallade V has a Trainer Gallery card as well.

Which cards does each Pokémon V have?

Pokémon V Main run Ultra rare Trainer Gallery VSTAR or VMAX
Delphox V 027 173 None None
Kyurem V 048 174 None VMAX 049, 197
Magnezone V 056 175 None VSTAR 057, 198
Rotom V 058 176, 177 None None
Enamorus V 082 178 TG18 None
Aerodactyl V 092 179, 180 None VSTAR 093, 199
Drapion V 118 182 None VSTAR 119, 200
Galarian Perrserker V 129 183, 184 None None
Giratina V 130 185, 186 None VSTAR 131, 201, 212

Hisuian Zoroark V 146 None None VSTAR 147, 203, 213
Hisuian Electrode V None 172 None None
Gallade V None 181 TG19 None

Four Pokémon V have two ultra rare cards: Rotom, Aerodactyl, Galarian Perrserker and Giratina. Each pair is credited to two different illustrators, so the two show different artwork, which is called alternate art. Giratina and Hisuian Zoroark are the only two with three VSTAR cards. Hisuian Zoroark V is the one Pokémon V with no ultra rare at all.

What sits above 196?

Twenty-one cards, in two blocks:

  1. 197 to 211, rainbow. All 15 are in rainbow foil: Kyurem VMAX, the six Pokémon VSTAR, and rainbow versions of the eight Supporters at 189 to 196.
  2. 212 to 217, gold. All 6 are in gold: Giratina VSTAR, Hisuian Zoroark VSTAR and four Trainer cards.

CGC lists rainbow rare and gold rare cards among its kinds of secret rare. All but two of the cards above 196 share a name with a card in the main run; the exceptions are two of the gold Trainer cards, at 215 and 216. A rainbow Supporter shares its illustrator with the same Supporter’s ultra rare at 189 to 196.

The 30 gallery cards show artwork of popular Trainers and Pokémon. The gallery runs in four blocks:

Numbers Cards What they are
TG01 to TG11 11 Pokémon that are not V cards, from Parasect to Castform
TG12 to TG22 11 7 Pokémon V and 4 Pokémon VMAX
TG23 to TG28 6 Supporter cards
TG29 and TG30 2 Pikachu VMAX and Mew VMAX, both recorded in gold

Only 11 of the 30 share a name with a card in the main list: nine of the first block’s Pokémon, plus Enamorus V and Gallade V. The rest appear in Lost Origin only in the gallery. They include a Charizard (TG03), and Orbeetle, Centiskorch, Pikachu and Eternatus each as both V and VMAX. Pikachu appears on five cards across the two lists: 052 in the main run, and TG05, TG16, TG17 and TG29 in the gallery.

How does it compare with the other Trainer Galleries?

Four Sword & Shield sets have a 30-card Trainer Gallery.

Set Released Pokémon, not V V and VMAX Supporters TG29 and TG30
Brilliant Stars February 25, 2022 12 11 5 Two Urshifu VMAX
Astral Radiance May 27, 2022 12 11 5 Two Calyrex VMAX
Lost Origin September 9, 2022 11 11 6 Pikachu VMAX and Mew VMAX
Silver Tempest November 11, 2022 11 11 6 Rayquaza VMAX and Duraludon VMAX

So the format held across 2022, with one change: from Lost Origin on, the first block shrank by one Pokémon and the Supporters grew by one. TG29 and TG30 are gold in Astral Radiance, Lost Origin and Silver Tempest. The next Sword & Shield set, Crown Zenith, has a 70-card Galarian Gallery instead. Our guide to completing a Pokémon set explains how collectors treat these subsets.

What products hold Lost Origin packs?

Pokémon’s notices list Elite Trainer Boxes, special collections and booster packs, plus a Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box that Pokémon Center sold only in the UK, the US and Canada. For pack counts, check the printed contents on the box or the seller’s listing. Our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes, booster boxes and Pokémon sealed products explain the formats.

How do you check Lost Origin card prices?

The main list and the Trainer Gallery have separate pages in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, each with number, rarity and NM market price. Sort the main page by number and Giratina’s cards sit at 130, 131, 185, 186, 201 and 212. For one card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number, and the price changes page compares prices between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.

These are past raw-card prices, and they say nothing about where prices go. If you plan to grade, our guide to deciding whether to grade a card covers the costs.

What should you check before buying?

  1. The number. Giratina VSTAR is three cards (131, 201 and 212), and Giratina V three more. Match the card number to the version a listing claims.
  2. Main list or gallery. A TG number marks a Trainer Gallery card. Pikachu VMAX appears only in the gallery, at TG17 and TG29.
  3. Which ultra rare. Rotom V, Aerodactyl V, Galarian Perrserker V and Giratina V each have two ultra rare cards credited to different illustrators.
  4. Sealed product and genuine cards. See our guides to spotting resealed Pokémon packs and spotting fake Pokémon cards, and our guide to Pokémon card finishes for how foils differ.

The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guides to Evolving Skies, Crown Zenith and Black Bolt and White Flare cover more sets the same way.
