Astral Radiance is an expansion in Pokémon’s Sword & Shield series, released May 27, 2022. It introduced Radiant Pokémon, a new kind of Shiny Pokémon card, and highlights Pokémon from the Hisui region, with Hisuian Decidueye, Hisuian Typhlosion and Hisuian Samurott appearing on cards for the first time. The set comes in two lists: a main list of 216 cards, 189 inside the printed total and 27 above it, and a Trainer Gallery of 30 cards numbered TG01 to TG30.

When did Astral Radiance come out?

The set was out at participating retailers around the world on May 27, 2022. It sits between Brilliant Stars (February 25, 2022) and Lost Origin (September 9, 2022), with other card products in between.

Rip.fan’s price pages give both lists the code ASR. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the Sword & Shield series in the longer history.

How many cards are in Astral Radiance?

216 in the main list, plus the 30-card Trainer Gallery. The first 159 numbers are the main run, before the ultra rare block: cards 001 to 134 are Pokémon and 135 to 159 are Trainer cards. The set has no Energy card inside its printed total. The tiers break down like this, with the V, VMAX and VSTAR cards sorted by name:

Tier Cards Numbers What they are
Common 40 Within 002 to 131 Pokémon
Uncommon 47 Within 003 to 159 24 Pokémon and 23 Trainer cards
Rare 21 Within 012 to 132 Pokémon
Holo rare 20 Within 016 to 147 18 Pokémon and 2 Supporters
Radiant rare 3 027, 046, 081 Radiant Heatran, Radiant Greninja, Radiant Hawlucha
Pokémon V 19 Within 001 to 134 One card each for 19 Pokémon
Pokémon VMAX 2 026, 073 Heatran and Machamp
Pokémon VSTAR 7 Within 018 to 114 One card each for 7 Pokémon
Ultra rare 30 160 to 189 21 Pokémon V and 9 Supporters
Secret rare 27 190 to 216 10 VSTAR, 2 VMAX, 9 Supporters, 5 other Trainer cards and a Special Energy

A black circle marks a common, a black diamond an uncommon and a black star a rare. A reverse holofoil version exists for 128 of the 159 main-run cards; the 31 without one are the V, VMAX, VSTAR and Radiant cards. A card numbered above the printed total is a secret rare.

How do Pokémon’s counts compare with the list?

Two of Pokémon’s figures are higher than the main run holds, and they match once the cards above the main run are included:

Pokémon’s figure In the main run In the whole main list
Pokémon V: 21 19 21, adding Virizion V (164) and Jirachi V (170), which appear only as ultra rares
Pokémon VMAX: 2 2 2
Pokémon VSTAR: 8 7 8, adding Kleavor VSTAR, whose only card is a rainbow secret rare at 196
Trainer Gallery: 30 Not in the main list 30, TG01 to TG30

All four match once the whole list is counted. Brilliant Stars is the opposite case: the 20 Pokémon V in its March 2022 notice match its main run, while the whole set has 24 Pokémon V names. So check a notice’s figure against both the main run and the whole list. Our Brilliant Stars guide shows that set’s figures.

Which Pokémon have VSTAR or VMAX cards?

Ten. Their cards in the main list are laid out below:

Pokémon Pokémon V VSTAR or VMAX Ultra rare V Rainbow Gold
Hisuian Lilligant 017 VSTAR 018 162, 163 190 None
Heatran 025 VMAX 026 165 191 None
Origin Forme Palkia 039 VSTAR 040 167 192 208
Hisuian Typhlosion 053 VSTAR 054 169 193 None
Machamp 072 VMAX 073 171, 172 194 None
Hisuian Decidueye 083 VSTAR 084 173 195 None
Kleavor 087 None None VSTAR 196 None
Darkrai 098 VSTAR 099 None None None
Hisuian Samurott 101 VSTAR 102 176 197 209
Origin Forme Dialga 113 VSTAR 114 177 198 210

Darkrai is the one VSTAR Pokémon with no card above the main run. Kleavor is the reverse: its Pokémon V is in the main run, but its VSTAR is only the rainbow card.

How do the three Hisuian starters line up?

Each has a Stage 2 card in the main run as well: Hisuian Typhlosion at 052, Hisuian Decidueye at 082 and Hisuian Samurott at 100. Kouki Saitou is credited on all three Stage 2 cards, Shin Nagasawa on all three main-run Pokémon V, and 5ban Graphics on every one of their VSTAR cards. Samurott is the only one of the three with a gold VSTAR.

Which Pokémon V have two ultra rare cards?

Beedrill (160, 161), Hisuian Lilligant (162, 163), Machamp (171, 172) and Hisuian Sneasler (174, 175). Each pair is credited to two different illustrators, so the two cards show different artwork, which is alternate art. Four Pokémon V have no ultra rare card at all: Galarian Mr. Rime, Lucario, Kleavor and Darkrai.

What sits above 189?

Twenty-seven cards, in two blocks:

  1. 190 to 207, rainbow. Seven VSTAR and two VMAX cards, then rainbow versions of all nine Supporters from the ultra rare block.
  2. 208 to 216, gold. Three VSTAR cards (Origin Forme Palkia, Hisuian Samurott and Origin Forme Dialga), five other Trainer cards and a Special Energy card.

Four of the cards above 189 have no other card in the main list: Kleavor VSTAR, two of the gold Trainer cards and the Special Energy. CGC lists rainbow rare and gold rare cards among its kinds of secret rare.

The 30 cards carry artwork of fan-favorite Trainers and Pokémon. The gallery runs in four blocks:

Numbers Cards What they are
TG01 to TG12 12 Pokémon that are not V cards, from Abomasnow to Hoothoot
TG13 to TG23 11 9 Pokémon V and 2 Pokémon VMAX
TG24 to TG28 5 Supporter cards
TG29 and TG30 2 Two Calyrex VMAX, both recorded in gold

Only 7 of the 30 share a name with a card in the main list: Wyrdeer, Kleavor, Mightyena, Bronzong and Hoothoot from the first block, plus Starmie V and Garchomp V. The other 23 appear in Astral Radiance only in the gallery. They include Zacian V, Zamazenta V, Calyrex in two forms as both V and VMAX, and Galarian Articuno V, Galarian Zapdos V and Galarian Moltres V, whose only cards in Brilliant Stars are gold secret rares. Our Lost Origin guide compares the four Sword & Shield Trainer Galleries side by side.

What products hold Astral Radiance packs?

The set came in booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes and special collections, plus a Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box for buyers in the US, Canada and the UK, which holds additional booster packs and accessories. Check the printed contents on the box or the seller’s listing for pack counts. Our guides to Elite Trainer Boxes and Pokémon sealed products explain the formats.

How do you check Astral Radiance card prices?

The main list and the Trainer Gallery have separate pages in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, each with number, rarity and NM market price. Sort the main page by number and Origin Forme Palkia’s cards sit at 039, 040, 167, 192 and 208. For one card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number, and the price changes page compares prices between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.

If you plan to grade, our guide to deciding whether to grade a card covers the costs.

What should you check before buying?

  1. The number. Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR is three cards (114, 198 and 210). Match the card number to the version a listing claims.
  2. Main list or gallery. Starmie V has three cards: 030 in the main run, 166 among the ultra rares and TG13 in the gallery.
  3. Which Kleavor. Two Kleavor cards sit in the main run (085 and 086), with a third at TG08, a Pokémon V at 087 and the VSTAR only at 196.
  4. The finish. Radiant, V, VMAX and VSTAR cards have no reverse holofoil version; every other main-run card has one. See our guide to Pokémon card finishes.
  5. Sealed product and genuine cards. See our guides to spotting resealed Pokémon packs and spotting fake Pokémon cards.
