Topps Chrome is the chromium version of Topps’ main baseball set: a base set printed on shiny chromium stock, a long run of Refractor parallels, and autographs led by the rookie class. The 2026 edition has 300 base cards, and a hobby box holds 20 packs of 4 cards with one autograph. Each box format also carries a Refractor family of its own, so the format decides which colors can turn up.
What is Topps Chrome?
The release merges Topps’ flagship brand with chromium technology, and is expected to feature leading players from both Series 1 and Series 2. So many players from the flagship set appear again, on a glossier card with its own parallels and its own autograph sets.
Topps Chrome is three decades old. The chrome formula debuted in 1996 Topps Chrome Baseball, and the 1996-97 basketball edition marked the birth of the “chromie,” a word for a collector drawn to the shiny cards.
The Refractor finish is older still. Refractors began in the 1993 Topps set Baseball’s Finest, and the name is a Topps trademark. So other makers use their own names, such as Prizm at Panini. Our guide to Panini Prizm covers that brand.
What is in the 2026 base set?
Three groups share the base card numbers 1 to 300:
- Base cards. All 300. 67 of them carry the RC flag.
- Image variations. 50 cards that keep the base number but show a different photo, listed at 1:103 hobby packs. Ten of them also come as super short prints, listed at 1:5,115.
- Refractors. Copies of the base cards in the finishes set out in the next section.
Because a variation shares its number with the base card, the number alone will not tell you which one you hold. Card 1 is Shohei Ohtani in both the base set and the variations. Each variation has a code printed on the back: CMP138752 for the image variations and CMP142156 for the super short prints. Check the code as well as the number.
How does the Refractor ladder work?
The base set has a ladder of parallels that runs from unnumbered finishes down to a run of one.
| Base Refractor | Print run | Listed hobby rate |
|---|---|---|
| Refractor | Not numbered | 1:3 |
| Prism Refractor (hobby only) | Not numbered | 1:5 |
| Negative Refractor | Not numbered | 1:43 |
| Pink | 250 | 1:69 |
| Aqua | 199 | 1:86 |
| Blue | 150 | 1:114 |
| Green | 99 | 1:173 |
| Purple, and the 75th Anniversary Refractor | 75 each | 1:228 each |
| Gold | 50 | 1:341 |
| White | 30 | 1:569 |
| Orange | 25 | 1:683 |
| Black | 10 | 1:1,705 |
| Red | 5 | 1:3,416 |
| SuperFractor | 1 | 1:16,958 |
| Printing plates | 1 | 1:4,259 |
These are rates per pack. By Rip.fan’s arithmetic, a 1:3 rate across a 20-pack hobby box comes to six or seven plain Refractors.
How do you tell a Refractor from a base card?
Tilt it. A Refractor has a reflective coating that shows a rainbow at an angle. Later Refractors print an R or the word Refractor near the card number on the back, which the first ones in 1993 did not. Every color from Pink down also carries a serial number, and the run should match the color: a Gold Refractor should read out of 50. Our guide to serial-numbered cards explains the stamp.
Which Refractors come in which box?
The base colors turn up across most formats, at very different rates. Most formats also have a family found nowhere else. In the 2026 edition:
| Format | Packs and cards | Its own Refractor family |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby | 20 packs of 4 | Prism Refractor, 1:5 |
| Jumbo | 12 packs of 11 | Wave Refractor at 1:2, with colors numbered from 150 down to 5 |
| Breaker Delight | 1 pack of 12 | Geometric Refractor at 1:1, with colors numbered from 99 down to 2 (Tie-Dye) |
| Mega | 6 packs of 7 | X-Fractor at 1:1, with colors numbered from 199 down to 10 |
| Value Blaster | 7 packs of 4 | RayWave, Baseball Seams and Red White and Blue Refractors at 1:8 each, with RayWave colors numbered from 199 down to 10 |
A hobby box holds 1 autograph, and Jumbo and Breaker Delight boxes hold 2. The Fanatics Mega exclusive format has a Topps Refractor at 1:1 and a Blue Topps Refractor at 1:6.
Rates do not compare well across formats, because the packs differ in size. The Pink Refractor is listed at 1:69 in hobby and 1:7 in Breaker Delight, but a Breaker Delight pack holds 12 cards against 4. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes covers the formats in general.
How do rookie cards work in Chrome?
A rookie’s base card carries the RC flag on the checklist. Our guide to what counts as a rookie card explains the baseball RC logo and the rules behind it. A colored Refractor of that card keeps the same number, so a listing should name the parallel as well as the player. For prospect cards, see our guide to Bowman Chrome and 1st Bowman cards.
The main rookie autograph set is Rookie Autographs, an on-card set of 94 cards with numbers that start RA-. It comes at 1:46 hobby packs, 1:14 in jumbo and 1:2 in Breaker Delight. Our guide to sticker and on-card autographs explains the difference.
The autograph ladder is not the base ladder. It starts higher, with a Refractor numbered to 499, then Teal (299) and Yellow (275), before it runs from Pink (250) to Red (5) and a SuperFractor 1/1, as the base ladder does. Breaker Delight has its own Geometric autograph colors, and the retail formats have RayWave autograph colors. A separate 30-card Retail Rookie Autographs set is listed only for the blaster, Mega and Fanatics formats.
What other autographs are in Topps Chrome?
Several smaller sets sit beside the rookies. In 2026, the larger ones are Ink Strokes (71 cards), 75th Diamond Autographs (69), Chrome Legend Autographs (47), World Series Champions Autographs (33) and Chromographs (32). Smaller sets include Future Stars Autographs (8) and 1991 Topps Autographs (6), signed cards in the 1991 Topps design.
The checklist also lists 30 Fanatics Authentics redemption cards, marked as a Fanatics Mega exclusive. Our guide to sports card redemptions explains what these cards are and how they work.
How to check a Topps Chrome card before you buy
- Read the year and the card number. Base cards and their Refractors use plain numbers from 1 to 300. Autographs use a letter prefix, such as RA- for Rookie Autographs.
- Tilt the card for the rainbow, and look for the Refractor mark on the back.
- If it is numbered, match the run to the color in the ladder above.
- For a well-known player, check the back code to rule out an image variation.
- For a rookie, confirm the base card carries the RC flag on the checklist.
- Check centering with our centering checker, then price the card from sales of the exact parallel, as our guide to valuing a sports card explains.
If you plan to grade a card, the grading cost calculator lists grading service levels, prices and estimated waits, each with the day its price was read, and our guide to whether a card is worth grading helps you decide. The sports cards hub gathers the rest of Rip.fan’s sports coverage, including our guide to Donruss Rated Rookies.
