A Rated Rookie is the rookie card in Panini’s Donruss sets: a base set card from the player’s first season, labeled Rated Rookie. In 2025 Donruss football the Rated Rookies are the last 100 cards of the 400-card base set, numbers 301 to 400, and each is marked RC on the checklist. Donruss Optic carries the same design on chromium stock, but numbers its Rated Rookies 201 to 300. So one player can have several Rated Rookie cards in one season, and the product name matters as much as the number.

Where did Rated Rookies come from?

Baseball. Donruss first labeled a run of base cards as Rated Rookies in its 1984 baseball set, cards 27 to 46, with the players chosen by Bill Madden. Panini bought Donruss Playoff in March 2009 and renamed it Panini America, which is why Donruss is now a Panini brand.

Donruss Optic Baseball is a chrome take on the main Donruss set. Our guide to Panini Prizm covers Panini’s other chromium set.

How do Donruss and Optic compare?

The box contents are expected counts. The 2025 Donruss box holds 42 inserts.

The 300 Donruss base cards are veterans and legends, alongside the 100 Rated Rookies. An Optic hobby box holds 9 numbered parallels and 3 Holo parallels.

How can one player have several Rated Rookie cards?

Take the first card on both lists, Travis Hunter. In 2025 he has:

  • Card 301 in Donruss, the standard Rated Rookie.
  • Card 301 in the Optic Rated Rookie Preview set, a 100-card set in Donruss that reuses the numbers 301 to 400 and is not marked RC. Holo versions of these previews come only in the Donruss Complete Factory Set Hobby edition.
  • Card 201 in Donruss Optic, the chromium Rated Rookie.

The two Rated Rookie lists also differ in who is on them. 88 of the 100 players appear in both, so a player can have a Donruss Rated Rookie and no Optic one, or the reverse. Always name the product and year with the number.

What separates the base card from the parallels?

Each product has its own family of parallels, and the names do not cross over. This table sorts the 2025 football versions of a Rated Rookie by what to look for:

Card Product How to spot it Print run
Rated Rookie Donruss Number 301 to 400, the standard card Not numbered
Press Proof Blue, Green, Purple, Red or Yellow Donruss Same number, colored Not numbered
Press Proof Silver, Gold or Black Donruss Same number, colored, stamped 199, 50 and 10
Press Proof Silver, Gold or Black Die-Cut Donruss Same number, die-cut, stamped 99, 25 and 1
Optic Rated Rookie Optic Number 201 to 300, chromium Not numbered
Holo Optic Same number, Holo finish Not numbered
Optic numbered colors Optic Same number, colored, stamped From Neon Blue at 399 down to 1/1

Donruss also lists Season Stat Line and Jersey Number parallels, with runs of up to 500 and up to 99. Optic’s one of ones are Black, Gold Vinyl and Nebula. Our guide to serial-numbered cards explains how to read a stamp.

How does the Optic ladder run?

Optic has far more colors than Donruss: 21 unnumbered colors, Holo among them, and 26 numbered ones, grouped here by run:

Tier Colors, shortest run first
One of ones Black, Gold Vinyl and Nebula
5 to 10 Green at 5, Gold at 10
15 to 32 Ice, Neon Yellow and Purple Stars at 15, then Footballs at 16, Dragon at 24, Black Pandora at 25 and Team Logo at 32
50 to 99 Lime Green at 50, then Blue Mojo at 55, Purple at 60, Electricity at 75, Orange Scope at 79 and Pink Velocity at 99
149 to 399 Red at 149, Flex and Neon Green at 199, Blue at 249, Orange at 299, Wave at 300 (Premium Box Set only), Aqua at 349 and Neon Blue at 399

More than 15 of the Optic parallels are hobby-only, among them Black Pandora, Ice, Green and Gold Vinyl.

Which formats have their own colors?

In 2025 Optic boxes, some formats have their own parallels:

  • H2 boxes: 5 Red Mojo or Blue Mojo parallels.
  • 1st Off the Line boxes: Purple Stars versions, including an autograph numbered to 42 or less.
  • Choice boxes: Dragon, Footballs or Nebula parallels.

Our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains the formats.

Which autographs are Rated Rookies?

Both products sign their Rated Rookies:

  • Donruss Rated Rookie Autographs: 86 cards, with the base version numbered to 199 or less.
  • Optic Rated Rookie Preview Autographs: 67 cards, listed on the Donruss checklist.
  • Optic Rated Rookie Autographs: 48 cards, numbered to 350 or less.
  • Optic Rated Rookie RPS Autographs: 42 cards, numbered to 350 or less, with on-card signatures.

Our guide to sticker and on-card autographs explains why that matters to many buyers.

What about Donruss baseball and basketball?

Both sports are laid out differently from football:

  • 2026 Donruss baseball has a 200-card base set with 100 Rated Prospect cards, which also come in Optic and Clearly versions.
  • 2025-26 Donruss basketball puts Base and Optic editions in the same box, each with its own parallels.

The photos in both sets have team and league logos airbrushed out.

How to check a Rated Rookie before you buy

  1. Read the product and year first. In 2025 football, a Rated Rookie numbered 301 is Donruss or an Optic Preview, and one numbered 201 is Optic.
  2. Check the stock: standard Donruss or chromium Optic.
  3. Name the parallel. Press Proof colors are Donruss parallels, and Holo is an Optic parallel.
  4. Match any stamp to that parallel’s run.
  5. Confirm the card sits in the base set, as our guide to what counts as a rookie card explains.
  6. Check centering with our centering checker, then price the exact card from sales, as our guide to valuing a sports card explains.

Our guides to Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome and 1st Bowman cards cover the baseball rookie cards, and the sports cards hub gathers the rest.
