Donruss Optic is Panini’s chromium version of its Donruss designs, and how you buy it depends on the edition. In the three editions covered here, 2025 football and 2024-25 basketball are hobby products of their own, released January 26, 2026 and August 20, 2025, while 2026 baseball puts its Optic cards inside Donruss hobby boxes, 24 to a box. The colors carry over between sports, but many of their print runs do not: Black Pandora is numbered to 25 on 2025 football Rated Rookies, to 15 on 2024-25 basketball base cards, and not at all on 2026 baseball Optic cards.
How is Optic sold in each edition?
| 2025 football | 2024-25 basketball | 2026 baseball | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Released | January 26, 2026 | August 20, 2025 | May 27, 2026, as Donruss |
| How Optic is sold | Its own hobby box | Its own hobby box | Inside Donruss hobby boxes |
| Hobby box | 20 packs of 4 cards | 20 packs of 4 cards | 12 packs of 16 cards |
| Boxes per case | 12 | 12 | 12 |
| Listed per hobby box | 1 autograph, 20 Rated Rookies, 9 numbered parallels, 3 Holo parallels, 4 inserts | 1 autograph, 11 parallels, 9 inserts | 24 Optic cards, 3 autograph or relic cards, 12 inserts |
The baseball figure works out to two Optic cards in each of the 12 packs. The 2026 Donruss baseball cards are not licensed by MLB, so team and league logos are airbrushed out of the photos.
Football has the most familiar layout: 200 base cards and 100 Rated Rookies at 201 to 300, with the full Rated Rookie color ladder. Our guide to Donruss Rated Rookies covers that numbering, the football formats and how Optic compares with standard Donruss.
How are the basketball and baseball sets numbered?
Each sport splits its Optic cards differently:
| Sport | Card numbers | Set | Cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 basketball | 1 to 250 | Base, veterans and legends | 250 |
| 2024-25 basketball | 251 to 300 | Rated Rookies | 50 |
| 2024-25 basketball | 301 to 350 | Rated Rookie Signatures | 50 |
| 2026 baseball | 1 to 100 | Optic base | 100 |
| 2026 baseball | 101 to 200 | Optic Rated Prospects | 100 |
| 2026 baseball | 101 to 200 | Optic Rated Prospect Signatures | 100 |
The 2024-25 basketball base set splits into 225 base cards, 25 legends and 50 Rated Rookies, 300 in all. In baseball, a signed and an unsigned Rated Prospect share a number, so read the set name as well. Our guide to what counts as a rookie card explains where Rated Rookies fit.
Which colors change their run from sport to sport?
Many of them. These are the base-level colors for each sport:
| Color | 2025 football Rated Rookies | 2024-25 basketball base | 2026 baseball Optic base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holo | Not numbered | Not numbered | Not numbered |
| Black Pandora | 25 | 15 | Not numbered |
| Purple | 60 | Not numbered | 49 |
| Red | 149 | 99 | 99 |
| Orange | 299 | 175 | 199 |
| Lime Green | 50 | 149 | 149 |
| Pink Velocity | 99 | 79 | 79 |
| Gold | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| Green | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| Gold Vinyl | 1 of 1 | 1 of 1 | 1 of 1 |
White Sparkle is not numbered in football or basketball. Cracked Ice is numbered to 25 in basketball and baseball. Blue is numbered to 249 in football and 49 in basketball. Electricity is numbered to 75 in football and 69 in baseball.
The rule that follows: never assume an Optic color’s run from another sport. A Purple stamped out of 60 is football, out of 49 baseball, and an unnumbered Purple basketball. Baseball also adds Blue Cracked Ice, numbered to 15. Our guides to sports card parallels and how serial-numbered cards work explain how to read a stamp.
Does a color keep its run inside one set?
Not always. In 2025 football, Black Pandora is numbered to 25 on the base cards and Rated Rookies, to 35 on the Rated Rookie autographs, to 149 on most inserts, and back to 25 on the Downtown, Downtown Duos, Downtown Legends, Sunday Kings and Uptown inserts and on the relic sets. White Sparkle is unnumbered on base cards and Rated Rookies, but a one of one on those same five insert sets. Both patterns show up on Hunter’s cards: a Downtown Black Pandora numbered to 25, a 2015 Retro Black Pandora numbered to 149, and Downtown and Uptown White Sparkle cards numbered 1 of 1.
In basketball, the base cards’ Black Pandora is numbered to 15 and the Rated Rookie Signatures’ to 25. Name the set and the color before you trust a run.
Why do some basketball colors carry a box name?
Because Optic basketball came in many box formats, and many colors share a name with one. The 2024-25 basketball release has seven formats, and 24 of the 74 base colors carry one of those format names:
| Format | Box | Per box | Colors with its name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby | 20 packs of 4 cards | 1 autograph, 11 parallels, 9 inserts | None by name; Cracked Ice and Black Pandora are hobby-only |
| FOTL | 20 packs of 4 cards | As hobby, plus an FOTL color numbered to 14 or fewer, or an FOTL autograph numbered to 7 or fewer | 2: Green FOTL, 14, and Black FOTL, 3 |
| Hobby International | 20 packs of 4 cards | 11 parallels, 9 inserts | 7, from two unnumbered colors to Gold International, 10 |
| Choice | 1 pack of 8 cards | 1 autograph, 7 parallels | 6, from unnumbered Choice Dragon to a Choice Nebula one of one |
| Fast Break | 10 packs of 9 cards | 1 autograph, 12 parallels, 6 inserts | 9, from Fast Break Holo to a Fast Break Black one of one |
| Hobby Blaster | 6 packs of 5 cards | 3 parallels, 4 inserts | None by name |
| Hobby Mega | 7 packs of 8 cards | 14 Seismic and 4 Silver parallels, 10 inserts | None by name |
Choice White, numbered to 48, is Choice-only, and Holo, Red and Gold are among the hobby-exclusive colors. A format name in a color is a pointer to check against that box’s listing, not proof on its own. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains why makers split colors by format.
What is Downtown?
A short-printed insert set that shows up in all three sports covered here. In 2025 Optic football it comes as Downtown (25 cards), Downtown Duos (15) and Downtown Legends (10), each with Black Pandora, Gold, Gold Vinyl and White Sparkle versions. In 2024-25 Optic basketball, Downtown is new to the product and hobby-only, a 30-card set with Gold and Gold Vinyl versions. In 2026 Donruss baseball, Downtown Duos is new, with a Gold version numbered to 10. The short print entry explains the term.
How to check an Optic card before you buy
- Name the sport and the edition year. For baseball, the card comes from a Donruss box.
- Read the number and the set name. A basketball Rated Rookie sits at 251 to 300, and a signed one at 301 to 350.
- Match the color and stamp to that sport’s run, using the table above.
- For basketball, note any format name in the color, such as Choice, Fast Break, International or FOTL, and check it against that box’s listing.
- Check the corners and surface, and measure the borders with our centering checker, which shows the CGC and SGC grades a centering split allows.
- Price the exact card, color and year from recent sales, as our guide to finding what a card sold for explains.
Rip.fan’s card price lookup covers English Pokémon cards only, so sold listings are where to price Optic. Our guides to Panini Prizm and Panini Contenders cover two more Panini sets, the parallel entry has the short definition, and the sports cards hub lists the rest.
