Panini Contenders explained: Rookie Ticket autographs
How Panini Contenders works in football and basketball: the hobby box, how Rookie Tickets are numbered, their versions by print run, and who is not signed.

In football and basketball, Panini Contenders is built around the Rookie Ticket, its signed rookie card. The 2024 football edition came out June 11, 2025, and the 2023-24 basketball edition June 21, 2024. Both number their signed Rookie Tickets from 101, both give each one a long run of versions, and both leave some first-year players off every autograph list: Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels appear in 2024 football only on unsigned cards.
What comes in a Contenders box?
Several small packs per box.
| 2024 football | 2023-24 basketball | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | June 11, 2025 | June 21, 2024 |
| Hobby box | 6 packs of 8 cards | 4 packs of 8 cards |
| Boxes per case | 12 | 12 |
| Autographs per box, on average | 5, at least 1 of them on-card | 2 |
| Other cards listed per box | 10 inserts or parallels | 12 parallels, variations or inserts |
There are also 1st Off the Line (FOTL) boxes. In 2024 football, an FOTL box adds an exclusive autograph and an exclusive parallel, each numbered to 49 or fewer. In 2023-24 basketball, it adds an FOTL autograph numbered to 21 or fewer and an FOTL-only parallel numbered to 25. In football, Blasters, Mega boxes and Fat Packs each get a retail-only color of the base cards. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains why formats differ.
How are the Rookie Tickets numbered?
In the 2024 football edition, in blocks that start where the base set ends:
| Card numbers | Set | Cards |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 100 | Season Ticket, the base set | 100 |
| 101 to 142 | Rookie Ticket RPS autographs | 42 |
| 101 to 142 | Rookie Ticket RPS variation autographs | 42 |
| 143 to 302 | Rookie Ticket autographs | 127, with gaps |
| 143 to 182 | Rookie Ticket variation autographs | 32, with gaps |
For example, J.J. McCarthy is 101 and Dallas Turner 123 in the RPS block, and Austin Reed is 160 among the other Rookie Tickets.
3 RPS cards and 25 of the other Rookie Tickets are tagged “no base.” Ask a seller which version a tagged card is.
In 2023-24 basketball, the 40 hobby Rookie Ticket autographs run from 101 to 145 with gaps, and every one also comes as a horizontal variation with the same number. A separate set of 20 retail Rookie Ticket autographs takes 146 to 165. Our guide to what counts as a rookie card explains how these fit the wider definition.
How do you tell a variation from the regular card?
By the back. A 2024 football variation carries a V inside a football circle next to the copyright line, and a 2023-24 basketball variation has a V across from the card number. The number stays the same, so a listing that gives only the number cannot tell you which card it is. In basketball the front helps too: the variations have a horizontal layout.
Which version is your Rookie Ticket?
Read the stamp, then match it to the year. Each Rookie Ticket comes in a ladder of parallels, and the two editions use different ladders. Rip.fan shows some versions by print run only, while full checklists name every one.
| Stamp | 2024 football Rookie Ticket RPS | 2023-24 basketball Rookie Ticket autographs |
|---|---|---|
| No run listed | The base card, Opening Kickoff Ticket and one FOTL-only version | The base card, Premium Edition and Premium Edition Green Shimmer |
| 149 | Another named version | Not used |
| 99 | Another named version | Another named version |
| Varies by card | Ticket Stub, 97 or fewer | Ticket Stub, 46 or fewer |
| 75 | Another named version | Not used |
| 50 | Midfield Ticket | Not used |
| 49 | Not used | Another named version |
| 25 | Not used | Cracked Ice Ticket |
| 23 | Cracked Ice Ticket | Not used |
| 21 | Not used | Premium Edition Blue, FOTL only |
| 18 | Another named version | Not used |
| 10 | Clear Ticket | Clear Ticket, Premium Edition Gold |
| 5 | A second FOTL-only version | Premium Edition Red, FOTL only |
| 1 of 1 | One more named version, printing plates | One more named version, Premium Edition Gold Vinyl |
The Ticket Stub row says “varies” because runs differ by card: McCarthy’s Ticket Stub is numbered to 9 and Turner’s to 15. In the first row, the football FOTL-only version has no listed run, although FOTL autographs are numbered to 49 or fewer, so read that cell as unlisted, not as unnumbered.
Cracked Ice is the clearest example of why the year and the set matter. In 2024 football it is numbered to 25 on the Season Ticket base cards and to 23 on the Rookie Tickets. In 2023-24 basketball it is numbered to 25 on the Rookie Tickets. On 2024 Contenders Optic Rookie Tickets it is numbered to 22. The other 2024 football Rookie Tickets, cards 143 to 302, use the same ladder without the two FOTL-only versions, and their Ticket Stub runs to 99 or fewer. Our guide to how serial-numbered cards work explains how to read the stamp.
Which rookies are missing from the autograph lists?
Several, in both editions. The 2024 football edition has an unsigned memorabilia set called Rookie Ticket Swatches, 42 cards numbered 1 to 42. Eight of its players appear in no autograph set anywhere in 2024 Contenders football:
- Caleb Williams
- Jayden Daniels
- Drake Maye
- Bo Nix
- Malik Nabers
- Marvin Harrison Jr.
- Brock Bowers
- Xavier Worthy
Williams and Daniels get inserts, parallels and swatch cards, and no signed card. The same eight players are on 2024 Contenders Optic’s unsigned Rookie Tickets, cards 59 to 100, and on none of its Rookie Ticket autographs.
Basketball follows the same pattern. 15 of the 40 players in the 2023-24 Rookie Ticket Swatches set have no Rookie Ticket autograph, among them Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson.
The practical rule: check the year’s checklist to see which signed Rookie Tickets are listed. If a listing describes a signed Rookie Ticket of a player who is not on that year’s autograph lists, ask the seller for the set name, the card number and a photo of the back before you go further. The memorabilia card entry explains what a swatch card holds.
How does Contenders Optic differ?
It is its own product on chromium stock. The 2024 football edition, released June 18, 2025, has one pack of 6 cards per hobby box and 20 boxes per case. Each box lists 2 autographs, 2 base cards, 1 insert and 1 Season Ticket or Rookie Ticket parallel.
Its numbering also differs. The 100-card base set holds 58 Season Tickets (1 to 58) and 42 unsigned Rookie Tickets (59 to 100). The signed Rookie Ticket RPS cards are 101 to 142, as in Contenders, and the other signed Rookie Tickets run 143 to 207. The RPS ladder uses colors instead of ticket names: Silver, then Red to 175, Teal to 99, Blue to 75 and Orange to 50, down through Cracked Ice to 22, Gold to 10 and Nebula to 2, then a Gold Vinyl one of one.
How to check a Contenders card before you buy
- Name the sport and the edition year. The edition year is not the release year: 2024 football came out in June 2025.
- Read the number. In 2024 football, 101 to 142 is an RPS Rookie Ticket and 143 to 302 the other signed Rookie Tickets.
- Turn the card over and look for the variation mark.
- Match the stamp to that edition’s ladder. A Ticket Stub’s run changes from card to card.
- Confirm the player is on that year’s autograph list.
- Check the signature, as our guide to checking an autograph card explains, and see sticker and on-card autographs for why on-card matters to many buyers.
- Price the exact card, version and year from recent sales, as our guide to finding what a card sold for explains.
Rip.fan’s card price lookup covers English Pokémon cards only, so sold listings are where to price Contenders. If you sell on Whatnot, the seller fee calculator shows what you keep after its fees. Our guides to Panini Immaculate and Donruss Optic cover two more Panini sets, the autograph card entry has the short definition, and the sports cards hub lists the rest.
