Topps Chrome Update is Topps’ late-season chromium release: a fresh 200-card base set, heavy on rookies, with a long run of Refractor parallels. The 2025 baseball edition reached shops on December 10, 2025, and its hobby box holds 20 packs of 4 cards with one autograph. Each box format carries a Refractor family of its own, and one color can appear in four or more families with the same print run, so the pattern matters as much as the stamp. A first basketball edition followed in August 2026.

How is Chrome Update different from Topps Chrome?

It is a separate release with its own checklist. The 2025 edition builds on 2025 Topps Chrome to add rookie call-ups, such as Nick Kurtz, who missed the main Chrome base set. Our guide to Topps Chrome covers that set and the Refractor finish.

The base card numbers carry a USC prefix. In 2025 they run from USC2 to USC200: there is no USC1, and two cards share USC45, Cal Raleigh and Tommy Pham. The counts:

Flag on the base card Cards
RC (rookie card) 93
RD (Rookie Debut subset) 38
Neither 69
Total 200

So almost two in three base cards are rookie cards or rookie debut cards. There are also 22 image variations, with the code CMP115697 printed on the back; check that code rather than the number alone. Our guide to what counts as a rookie card explains the RC flag.

What comes in each 2025 box?

Format Packs and cards Boxes per case Autographs
Hobby 20 packs of 4 12 1
Jumbo 12 packs of 11 8 3
Mega 7 packs of 6 20 None per box; carried at listed rates
Breaker Delight 1 pack of 12 6 2

Value Blasters hold packs of 4 cards and carry autographs at listed rates, with none per box.

A hobby box holds 2 numbered parallels and 12 inserts, and a jumbo box 4 numbered parallels and 14 inserts. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains the formats.

Which box carries which Refractor family?

The plain Refractor colors come in every format, and patterned families repeat the same colors, each tied to certain boxes:

  • Wave Refractors are listed for hobby formats only.
  • RayWave Refractors are listed for retail formats only: Value Blasters and Mega boxes.
  • Lava Refractors carry rates in hobby, jumbo and retail boxes.
  • X-Fractors come in Mega boxes, and Sepia Refractors in Value Blasters.

Breaker Delight boxes also have a Geometric family.

Color Run Families it comes in Hobby rate: plain, Wave, Lava
Teal 299 Plain, RayWave 1:109 plain
Purple 250 Plain, RayWave 1:130 plain
Aqua 199 Plain, Wave, RayWave 1:164, 1:103
Blue 150 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:218, 1:136, 1:170
Green 99 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:330, 1:206, 1:258
Gold 50 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:653, 1:408, 1:510
White 30 Plain 1:1,087
Orange 25 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:1,304, 1:816, 1:1,020
Black 10 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:3,257, 1:2,037, 1:2,549
Red 5 Plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave 1:6,534, 1:4,074, 1:5,098
SuperFractor 1 Plain 1:32,452

Two things follow. First, a card stamped 37 of 99 could be any of at least four different Green parallels, so name the family when you buy or sell one. Second, in a hobby box the Wave version of a color is listed more often than the plain one. At 20 packs a box and 12 boxes a case, a plain Gold comes about once per 33 hobby boxes and a Gold Wave about once per 20, by Rip.fan’s arithmetic. A SuperFractor works out to about once per 1,623 hobby boxes. Any one box can differ from a listed rate.

Our guide to sports card parallels explains how families and colors work.

What are the rookie autographs and debut patch cards?

The main 2025 autograph sets, with Rip.fan’s arithmetic at 20 packs a box:

Set Cards Run Listed hobby rate
Chrome Update Autographs 127 Not numbered 1:110, about one per 5.5 boxes
Rookie Debut Autographs 61 Not numbered 1:185, about one per 9 boxes
Chrome Legends Autographs 49 50 1:4,466
Radiating Rookies Autographs 19 25 1:15,960

The 270 MLB Rookie Debut Patch Autographs cards have a run of 1 each.

The Rookie Lava Lamp Autographs come in six two-tone versions, from Magenta and Purple numbered to 299 down to Black and Red numbered to 8.

Each debut patch card holds the MLB Debut patch from the jersey a top rookie wore on his debut. Every card is a one of one. Our guide to patch cards and RPAs covers patch pieces and how makers label them.

How does the basketball edition compare?

The 2025-26 basketball edition is the first NBA Chrome Update, and it came out August 6, 2026. It keeps the baseball format but shuffles the families:

2025 baseball 2025-26 basketball

How to check a Chrome Update card before you buy

  1. Look for the USC prefix on a baseball base card, which marks the Update base set.
  2. Name the color and the family: plain, Wave, Lava, RayWave, X-Fractor or Sepia. The same color and run can belong to four or more families.
  3. Match the family to the format. A Wave card came from a hobby format and a RayWave from a retail box, so a listing that says otherwise is a reason to ask.
  4. Check the stamp against the color’s run. Our guide to how serial-numbered cards work explains the stamp.
  5. For an image variation, check the CMP115697 code on the back.
  6. Price the exact family and color from recent sales, as our guide to finding what a card sold for explains.

Rip.fan’s card price lookup covers English Pokémon cards only, so sold listings are where to price Chrome Update. If you sell on Whatnot, the seller fee calculator shows what you keep after its fees. Our guides to Topps Stadium Club and Bowman Chrome cover related sets, and the sports cards hub lists the rest.
