To buy a booster box safely, buy it from the maker’s own shop or a seller the maker names, check what the maker says the box holds before you pay, and look over the wrap the moment it arrives. Pokémon and Ravensburger state how many packs a box holds. With Wizards, Bandai and Konami, which describe a pack or price it, take the pack count from the packaging.
Where are booster boxes sold?
Each maker sends buyers to its own mix of shops:
- Pokémon: Pokémon Center is its official online shop, and it lists eight retailers: Ace Hardware, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, GameStop, Target and Walmart. It also sends buyers to local stores, with a store finder.
- Disney Lorcana: For Winterspell, Ravensburger lists local hobby stores, the Ravensburger store and Amazon, and its product pages carry a store locator.
- Magic: Wizards’ product guide carries a store locator in its menu.
- One Piece: Bandai’s English site links an official shop from its menu.
- Yu-Gi-Oh!: In Europe, Konami sends buyers to Konami-certified official stores, with a store locator, and many retail shops and toy stores carry the cards too, with stock that varies by country and city.
- Sports cards: Upper Deck’s customer care team wrote in 2011 that its hobby product is sold only at specialized hobby stores, while retail product goes to larger stores and convenience stores. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes compares the two.
Pokémon launches have their own queues and limits, covered in our guides to card restocks at retail and where to buy Pokémon cards at list price. To find a store near you, see how to find a local card shop.
What does each maker say a box holds?
| Card game | Contents | Where to find the box count |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon, Pitch Black booster display | 36 booster packs, each with 10 cards, 1 Basic Energy and 1 code card | Pokémon’s expansion page |
| Disney Lorcana, Winterspell and Fabled | 24 booster packs of 12 cards, 288 cards in all | Ravensburger’s product pages |
| Magic | Per pack only: a Play Booster has at least 1 rare-or-higher card and at least 1 foil; a Collector Booster has 5 to 6 rare-or-higher cards and 8 to 10 foils | The packaging |
| One Piece | English OP-18: 127 plus 1 card types, but no cards per pack; Japanese OP-16: 6 cards a pack | The packaging |
| Yu-Gi-Oh!, Beyond the Brave | A 100-card set sold by the pack, with rarity counts | The packaging |
The cards in Pokémon packs vary from pack to pack. Bandai warns that the same card can turn up more than once, and that a full set may be hard to assemble. Our guides to Pokémon booster boxes, Magic Collector Boosters, One Piece box contents, Lorcana boxes and Yu-Gi-Oh! boxes go set by set.
Is every box a booster box?
No. Makers sell smaller boxes with fewer packs, and listings do not always say which is which. A Pitch Black Elite Trainer Box holds 9 packs, the Pokémon Center edition 11 and a Booster Bundle 6, against 36 in the booster display. Ravensburger’s Illumineer’s Trove holds 8 packs, against 24 in a booster display box. Match the product name in a listing to the maker’s page before you compare offers, and see our guide to Pokémon sealed products for the full range.
How do you check a seller before you pay?
On a marketplace, know which rules protect you:
- TCGplayer allows a sealed listing only when the box is in its original unopened packaging, undamaged, with every seal intact and no rewrapping or resealing. Packs taken out of a box must be listed as packs, never as a box, and empty boxes are banned outright.
- eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers an eligible purchase that does not arrive or is not as described, refunding the price plus original shipping, subject to its terms and payment rules. Its Authenticity Guarantee does not cover boxes or packs, so eBay’s authenticator does not inspect a sealed box before it ships.
- Whatnot’s Buyer Protection covers an order that never arrives, arrives damaged or is not what was listed, including a wrong item, a missing item or a card that is not authentic. For TCG and sports card orders, a refund request has to come within a week of delivery, and no later than 30 days after purchase; a suspected fake can be reported for 30 days. Its sellers must ship sealed wax in a box, never a bubble mailer.
TCGplayer’s own guide to fake Pokémon cards, updated May 13, 2026, says to be wary of sealed product priced far below the price on Pokémon Center’s store. Our guide to avoiding card scams online covers ways to pay that keep a dispute open.
How do you check the seal?
The detailed checks below are for Pokémon boxes. Ask the seller for photos of every side, and check:
- The wrap. TCGplayer says real Pokémon booster boxes come in soft cellophane printed with a Poké Ball logo. Hard, crackly wrap, or wrap with no logo, is a warning sign.
- The watermark. Cardmarket says the logo shows a Poké Ball with the word Pokémon beneath it and a copyright symbol beside the N. Some fakes copy the logo but leave the symbol off.
- The seams. Cardmarket says The Pokémon Company never uses more than one sealing stitch around the side of a box.
- The plastic. Cheap plastic struggles with heat, Cardmarket says, so stretch marks, burn marks or bubbles near the seam suggest a fake.
- The printing. TCGplayer counts pictures taken from the anime, mentions of a different set, and spelling or grammar mistakes as red flags. Cardmarket adds a wrong copyright year and the name Pokémon USA, which it says has not existed since 2009.
Once a Pokémon box is open, Cardmarket says the packs in a real box stand front to back, not side to side, and TCGplayer says a real pack has straight, flat seal edges. For sports boxes, Upper Deck’s 2011 advice was to look for its logo printed on the shrink-wrap and for glue or tape on the packaging. For other makers’ boxes, compare the box with one from a shop the maker lists. Our guide to spotting resealed packs and boxes covers more signs, and the glossary defines a resealed pack.
What should you do when the box arrives?
- Photograph it before you open it. Whatnot asks for photos of the item and its packaging with a claim, and the same pictures help with any seller.
- Compare it with the maker’s page. Check the set name, the product type and, where the maker states it, the pack count.
- Report a problem quickly. Whatnot’s window for TCG and sports card orders is 7 days from delivery; on eBay, contact the seller through My eBay first, and contact eBay if the issue is still open after three business days.
- Store it away from damp and heat. Our guide to storing sealed product covers stacking and humidity, and if you later sell it, how to sell Pokémon cards sets out the factory-sealed rules buyers rely on.
The Pokémon hub and the Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece and Lorcana hub list every set guide.
