SP Authentic is an Upper Deck hockey release built on a base set in two halves: 100 veterans and the season’s rookies, called Future Watch. Every Future Watch base card is numbered to 999, and most of them are signed, but not all. In the 2025-26 edition, 83 Future Watch cards carry an autograph and 25 do not, and no card number comes in both forms. Each box holds at least one autographed Future Watch card, on average.
What is in the SP Authentic base set?
Two blocks of cards. Cards 1 to 100 are veterans, and Upper Deck puts six of them in every pack. The Future Watch rookies start at card 101. The base set is billed as 100 star veterans and 100 Future Watch rookies, and each player’s NHL team is named.
The two halves behave differently. The veterans are the everyday cards of the set. The Future Watch cards are serial-numbered, and they come as hobby inserts.
Which Future Watch cards are signed?
The card number answers it. In the 2025-26 edition:
| Future Watch group | Card numbers | Signed | Unsigned | Print run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main block | 101 to 196 | 75 | 21 | 999 each |
| Later additions | Letter codes, FW-CD to FW-TW | 8 | 4 | 999 each |
| Total | 83 | 25 |
That makes 108 Future Watch base cards, eight more than the 100 rookies billed. Twelve of the 108 carry letter codes instead of numbers. No card number comes in both a signed and an unsigned form. Ozzy Wiesblatt’s card 101 exists only signed, and Owen Sillinger’s card 103 only unsigned. So a signed Future Watch card is not an autographed version of an unsigned one: each rookie gets one base form. Check the photos to see whether the autograph is on the card or on a sticker. Our guide to sticker and on-card autographs explains why the difference matters.
The 2024-25 checklist follows the same pattern. It has 73 signed and 31 unsigned Future Watch cards, all numbered to 999, again with no number in both forms.
A listing that reads “SP Authentic Future Watch /999” could be signed or unsigned. Find the player on the checklist first, then look for the signature in the photos. Our guide to what counts as a rookie card covers the wider question of which cards collectors treat as rookies.
How do the Limited colors work?
The Limited cards are unsigned color versions of the base cards. Veterans come in three colors and Future Watch rookies in five. From Upper Deck’s 2025-26 checklist:
| Limited color | Veterans | Future Watch | Print run | Listed rate in hobby |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Yes | Yes | Not numbered | 1:2, for each group |
| Blue | No | Yes | 399 | No rate listed |
| Green | No | Yes | 199 | No rate listed |
| Gold | Yes | Yes | 99 | No rate listed |
| Black | Yes | Yes | One of one | No rate listed |
Each Future Watch color has 100 cards. So most rookies, signed or not, also come in unsigned Limited versions, though 8 of the 12 lettered additions have none. A Blue or Green Limited card is always a rookie. Our guide to sports card parallels explains numbered colors in general.
What other Future Watch versions are there?
Four more, all built on the same rookies. The counts are Rip.fan’s, from Upper Deck’s checklist:
- Inscribed: 77 signed cards numbered to 50, each with an inscription that is a date.
- Horizontal: 77 signed cards in a sideways design. 61 are numbered to 599 and 16 to 199.
- Acetate: 50 unsigned acetate cards with no serial number.
- Auto Patch: signed cards with a memorabilia swatch, numbered to 100. Vertical versions are numbered to 50 or 25, and Black versions are one of one.
Our guide to patch cards and RPAs explains swatch cards.
What else is in SP Authentic?
Insert sets and more autographs. These are the listed card rates in hobby:
| Insert set | Cards | Who is on them | Listed rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshman Focus | 50 | Rookies | 1:3; Blue 1:12; Green 1:60 |
| Pageantry | 90 | Veterans, rookies and legends | 1:3; Red 1:10 |
| Collaborations | 25 | Two teammates on each card | 1:5; Blue 1:24; Green 1:120 |
| Outliers, new this year | 25 | Veterans | 1:5; Blue 1:24; Green 1:120 |
| Spectrum FX | 40 veterans and 51 rookies | Light-effect cards; the rookies come in three levels | Veterans 1:10; rookies 1:20, 1:42 or 1:160 |
| Holofoil and Holofoil Legends | 50 each | Hologram cards | 1:160 each |
| Future Icon | 50 | Rookies, all 50 flagged on the checklist | Numbered to 399; no rate listed |
The autograph list goes well past Future Watch. On the same checklist, Sign of the Times has 70 cards at 1:32 in hobby. Three sets sit at 1:60: signed Limited versions of 46 veteran base cards, UD Authentics Autographs (57 cards) and Pageantry Auto (53). After those come Color Palette Autographs (47 cards, 1:120), Chirography (30, 1:160) and Authentic Moments (14, 1:480). Sign of the Times cards with two to eight signatures are numbered from 25 down to 5. Memorabilia autographs include Limited Auto Material, numbered to 100 or fewer, and UD Authentics Auto Patch, numbered to 49 or 25.
What does a box hold?
A box holds these, on average:
- an Autograph Future Watch Rookies card (at least one), plus one more autograph card
- ten Limited Red cards, from the veterans or the rookies
- ten cards from Collaborations, Outliers or Freshman Focus
- four Pageantry cards and one Pageantry Red
- one numbered insert or rare tech insert
- at least one Spectrum FX card
Confirm how many packs and cards a box holds on the box or with the seller before you turn a pack rate into a box rate. The Holofoil cards are rare, case-level inserts, and both Holofoil sets run at 1:160 in hobby. Rates and per-box figures are averages across many packs and boxes, so any one box can differ. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains why hobby boxes carry different cards.
What are the update cards?
Upper Deck’s 2025-26 checklist also includes cards for earlier SP Authentic sets. Their set names start with an earlier year and the word Update, such as “2024 Update - Base Set - Autographed Future Watch”. There are 309 such entries, naming years from 2010 to 2024. Another 25 Acetate Retro Future Watch cards have names that carry earlier seasons, such as 2015-16.
All of these are inserts in packs. So if a card names an older season, look for it in the update section before assuming it is from an old box.
When does SP Authentic come out?
Upper Deck’s checklist archive dates each edition’s checklist, and those are posting dates rather than release dates:
| Edition | Checklist dated |
|---|---|
| 2025-26 | June 16, 2026 |
| 2024-25 | August 7, 2025 |
| 2023-24 | October 30, 2024 |
| 2022-23 | November 1, 2023 |
| 2021-22 | April 19, 2023 |
In this archive, each SP Authentic checklist is posted late in the season it is named for or after it. Our guide to Upper Deck hockey sets places SP Authentic in the full yearly lineup.
How to check an SP Authentic card before you buy
- Read the card number. 1 to 100 is a veteran; 101 and up, or an FW code, is Future Watch.
- For a Future Watch card, find the player on the checklist to see whether the base card is signed, then confirm the serial number reads out of 999.
- Match any Limited color to the table above. Blue and Green Limited cards exist only for the rookies.
- If the card names an earlier season, check the update section of the checklist.
- Measure the borders with our centering checker, which shows the CGC and SGC grades a centering split allows.
- Price the exact version from recent sales, as our guide to finding what a card sold for explains.
Rip.fan’s card price lookup covers English Pokémon cards only, so sold listings are where to price SP Authentic. If you sell on Whatnot, the seller fee calculator shows what you keep after its fees. Our guides to Young Guns and The Cup cover two other Upper Deck hockey releases, and the sports cards hub lists the rest of our sports coverage, including guides to Topps Finest and Panini Mosaic.
