Mythic rare
Mythic rare is the highest of Magic: The Gathering's four booster rarities, above rare, usually shown by an orange-red set symbol, and Wizards of the Coast added it in 2008 with Shards of Alara.
In more detail
Wizards announced the rarity in a June 2008 Making Magic column about Shards of Alara. In that set each pack held one rare, except roughly one pack in eight, which held a mythic rare in its place. The set had 53 rares and 15 mythic rares, and the column expected mythic rares to be cards such as planeswalkers and most legends.
A 2023 guide on the Magic news site MTG Rocks calls the orange-red color of the set symbol the main sign of a mythic rare, and says the share of packs that hold one varies by product and set. It adds that some rares and mythic rares carry no security stamp, so the symbol's color is the better check on recent cards.
Wizards said in the same column that mythic rares would come in a normal version and a premium foil version. Match the finish as well as the set symbol and the card number when you buy.
