Wizards of the Coast announced on October 5, 2026, that Magic will rename Play Boosters and remove their foil commons and uncommons. Collector Boosters will also lose cards. Wizards said the changes would leave MSRP unchanged.
The changes begin with Nauctis, which releases on February 5, 2027. Standard packs lose the promise of a foil, while Collector Boosters retain some common and uncommon foils.
Booster Packs replace the Play Boosters name
Wizards will call its standard product Booster Packs. Its retailer guidance describes the change as a new name for the existing product, not a separate product.
Japan Showcase cards will become available in standard boosters as traditional foils. Previously, the treatment appeared only in Collector Boosters.
The cards can appear in the standard booster’s wildcard position. Wizards will also increase card rates for foil rares and mythic rares in standard boosters.
Any foil in a standard Booster Pack will be rare or mythic rare. Removing common and uncommon foils also ends the promise that every standard pack contains a foil.
Collector Boosters lose cards
Collector Boosters will lose 2 foil commons and 1 foil uncommon. Wizards will leave those positions unfilled, reducing the total contents by 3 cards.
Some common and uncommon foils will remain in Collector Boosters. They will no longer be available through standard Booster Packs under the new contents plan.
Wizards said the cuts free printing capacity for Japan Showcase cards in standard boosters and the new rare-heavy configurations.
The booster announcement applies the unchanged MSRP to the package of changes. The smaller Collector Booster and revised standard booster both fall under that announcement.
Rare-heavy configurations share ordinary wrappers
God Packs will begin with Nauctis and continue across Magic Multiverse sets. They will appear among standard and Collector Boosters, with no separate product for stores to order.
Their outer wrappers will look like ordinary boosters of the same type. Wizards expects the configurations to reach Universes Beyond sets in 2028.
The published standard Booster Pack rate is 1 in 1,000. Each special configuration contains 14 rare or mythic rare cards, plus a separate card marking the configuration.
Of the rare and mythic rare cards, 2 have traditional foil Booster Fun treatments. Another 2 have non-foil Booster Fun treatments, and 10 are non-foil cards.
For Collector Boosters, the published rate is 1 in 300. The special configuration includes 5 foil Booster Fun rares or mythic rares.
It also contains 3 non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythic rares. Another 3 rare or mythic rare cards have foil default frames.
A foil land and a separate card marking the configuration complete the Collector Booster version.
Retail pages show the naming change
As of October 23, 2026, the Darkhold Destiny retailer page uses Booster Packs in its Prerelease contents. It lists 6 boosters alongside a separate traditional foil rare or mythic rare card.
Wizards identifies Darkhold Destiny as a Universes Beyond set. Its retailer page already uses the new standard booster name.
The Star Trek retailer page uses Play Boosters as of October 23, 2026. Its Prerelease contents include 6 boosters, each containing 14 cards, plus one extra traditional foil rare or mythic rare.

What to do
- Check whether a Nauctis standard Booster Pack listing still promises a foil in every pack. The revised contents remove that promise.
- Confirm that a Collector Booster listing reflects the 3-card reduction.
- Check whether a listing presents God Packs as a separate factory product. Wizards says they appear within ordinary booster stock and cannot be ordered separately.
