Steam Siege is a Pokémon expansion from the XY series, due in stores on August 3, 2016. It has 116 cards: 114 numbered up to the printed total of 114, and 2 above it. Pokémon highlighted seven Pokémon BREAK cards and six Pokémon-EX, and every one of them is in the set.

When did Steam Siege come out?

On August 3, 2016, the date Pokémon gave for its booster packs and a pair of theme decks.

Pokémon dated the sets on either side too. On April 7, 2016 it gave May 4 for Fates Collide, the set before Steam Siege, and on November 1, 2016 it put Evolutions packs in UK stores from November 2. Steam Siege has the code STS and sits in the XY series. For where XY sits among the other series, see Pokémon card eras, and for another XY set, see BREAKthrough.

How many cards are in Steam Siege?

  1. The numbers fall into five blocks:
Numbers Cards What they are
1 to 97 97 Pokémon, including 7 BREAK cards and 6 Pokémon-EX
98 to 106 9 Trainer cards: 5 Items, 2 Tools and 2 Supporters
107 to 112 6 Pokémon-EX labeled Rare Ultra on Rip.fan’s page
113 to 114 2 Supporters labeled Rare Ultra: Pokémon Ranger and Professor Sycamore
115 to 116 2 Volcanion-EX and Gardevoir-EX, labeled Rare Secret

The list has no Energy card and no Stadium card anywhere. Cards 115 and 116 fit CGC’s test for a secret rare, a collection number above the set number. Such a card normally has a twin of lower rarity with the same name, and both have one here: Volcanion-EX at 26 and Gardevoir-EX at 78.

Set aside the BREAK and EX cards and 84 regular Pokémon remain in the first block. Of them, 31 are common, 21 uncommon and 32 rare, and 9 of those rares carry the label Rare Holo on Rip.fan’s price pages. On the card, a black circle reads as common, a black diamond as uncommon and a black star as rare, which our guide to Pokémon rarity symbols covers in more detail.

What did Pokémon’s alert count?

The set’s card counts run like this:

Group Cards
Cards in the set 116
Pokémon BREAK 7, at 8, 21, 24, 35, 66, 82 and 87
Pokémon-EX, including Mega Steelix-EX and a Shiny Mega Gardevoir-EX 6 names, 2 of them Mega cards
Pokémon-EX with two types, two of them Mega Volcanion-EX, M Steelix-EX and M Gardevoir-EX

Volcanion and Magearna appear on cards for the first time in this set. The five added BREAK cards (Yanmega, Talonflame, Pyroar, Clawitzer and Hydreigon) are printed sideways, with a foil pattern of their own and gold-toned art. Dual-type Pokémon are back for the first time since the HeartGold & SoulSilver series: eight cards in the first block have two types, five of them regular Pokémon such as Shiftry and Volcarona.

M Gardevoir-EX appears at 79 and at 112 under the same name.

Which Pokémon-EX come in which versions?

Six names:

Pokémon-EX First block Rare Ultra, 107 to 112 Above 114
Volcanion-EX 26 107 115
Steelix-EX 67 108 None
M Steelix-EX 68 109 None
Magearna-EX 75 110 None
Gardevoir-EX 78 111 116
M Gardevoir-EX 79 112 None

Every EX name has two cards inside the printed total, and only Volcanion-EX and Gardevoir-EX gain a third. On Rip.fan’s price pages the first-block cards carry the label Rare Holo EX and the run at 107 to 112 carries Rare Ultra.

The illustrator credits help tell the versions apart. All three Volcanion-EX cards, both Magearna-EX cards and all four Mega cards are by 5ban Graphics. Steelix-EX and Gardevoir-EX switch from Eske Yoshinob on their first-block cards to Ryo Ueda at 108 and 111, and Gardevoir-EX goes back to Eske Yoshinob at 116. Our guides to Pokémon Mega Evolution cards and to ex, EX and GX labels explain what the M and EX in these names mean.

Which BREAK cards are in Steam Siege?

Seven, and each one has a regular card of the same Pokémon in the set:

BREAK card Number Type Regular card
Yanmega BREAK 8 Grass Yanmega, 7
Talonflame BREAK 21 Fire Talonflame, 96
Pyroar BREAK 24 Fire Pyroar, 23
Clawitzer BREAK 35 Water Clawitzer, 34
Yveltal BREAK 66 Darkness Yveltal, 65
Xerneas BREAK 82 Fairy Xerneas, 81
Hydreigon BREAK 87 Dragon Hydreigon, 86

Six of the seven sit right after their regular card. Talonflame BREAK is the exception: it is a Fire card at 21, among the Fire cards, while the regular Talonflame is a Colorless card at 96, 75 numbers later. All seven are by 5ban Graphics, and Rip.fan’s price pages carry them under the label Rare BREAK. CGC counts BREAK Pokémon cards among the other card types it lists.

Which Trainer cards does it have?

Eleven, all inside the printed total. Nine sit at 98 to 106: five Items, two Tools named Gardevoir Spirit Link and Steelix Spirit Link, and two Supporters, Ninja Boy at 103 and Pokémon Ranger at 104.

The other two are the Supporters at 113 and 114. Pokémon Ranger appears a second time at 113, credited to Megumi Mizutani where the card at 104 is credited to Yusuke Ohmura. Professor Sycamore has no regular card in Steam Siege at all, so the set’s only Professor Sycamore is 114/114.

What products held Steam Siege packs?

The UK alert named two. Each booster pack carried 10 of the set’s cards, and the pair of 60-card theme decks were named Ring of Lightning and Gears of Fire. The alert listed no booster box or collection, so check the contents printed on any sealed box against what a seller describes. Packs from 2016 deserve a close look before you buy, and how to spot a resealed Pokémon pack lists what gives a tampered wrapper away.

Which other set prints out of 114?

One: Black & White, the set that opens the Black & White series. Eight Pokémon names appear in both lists:

Pokémon Steam Siege Black & White
Oshawott 30 27 and 28
Dewott 31 29 and 30
Samurott 32 31 and 32
Joltik 41 44 and 45
Galvantula 42 46
Klink 71 74
Klang 72 75
Klinklang 73 76

Samurott is the one exact clash: each set has a Samurott at 32/114. The Steam Siege card is by Naoyo Kimura and Black & White’s card 32 is by 5ban Graphics, so the illustrator credit settles which one a listing shows. Where that credit sits in the small print is shown in how to read a Pokémon card.

How do you check Steam Siege card prices?

Steam Siege has a page of its own among Rip.fan’s Pokémon card prices, filed under the XY series. Each row gives a card’s number, its rarity label and its NM market price. Set the rarity filter to Rare BREAK and the seven BREAK cards appear together. Rare Holo EX shows the six first-block Pokémon-EX, and Rare Secret the two cards above 114. Sorting by card number lines up the three Volcanion-EX cards as 26, 107 and 115.

For one card from any set, the card price lookup matches what you type against the start of the words in a card’s name, its set or its number, and each result says which printing its price is for. Rip.fan’s price changes page lists a card when two of Rip.fan’s weekly checks both priced it at $5 or more and its price moved by a tenth or more and by a dollar or more. Every figure on these pages is a past price for a raw card, not a forecast.

What should you check before buying a Steam Siege card?

  1. The total and the credit. Steam Siege cards read out of 114, as cards from the Black & White set do, and a Samurott at 32/114 exists in both. Read the illustrator credit.
  2. The EX version. Volcanion-EX and Gardevoir-EX have three cards each, so match the card number to the listing as well as the name.
  3. Talonflame BREAK. It is 21/114, nowhere near the regular Talonflame at 96.
  4. Professor Sycamore. Steam Siege has only one, at 114/114.
  5. A real card. Before you pay, run through how to tell if a Pokémon card is fake.
