To buy a sports card box well, pick the format by what it holds, buy it from a seller the maker stands behind, and check the wrap and keep the receipt. Formats differ more than the word “box” suggests: one product can come in seven formats with different pack sizes and different parallels. The worked example is 2026 Topps Series 2, released June 10, 2026. For how hobby and retail channels differ in general, start with our guide to hobby and retail boxes.

What does each box format hold?

Format Packs and cards Cards per box Listed per box Parallel line tied to this format
Hobby 20 packs of 12 240 1 autograph or relic card, 1 Silver Pack Numbered Rainbow Foil (one site also lists it in jumbo)
Jumbo 10 packs of 40 400 1 autograph, 1 relic, 2 Silver Packs Sandglitter
Mega 14 packs of 14 196 4 Crackle Foil parallels, 14 retail-only inserts Crackle Foil
Value blaster 6 packs of 12 72 3 Holiday parallels, 6 retail-only inserts Holiday
Hanger 1 pack of 59 59 2 Diamante Foil parallels, 6 inserts Diamante Foil

The Super Box is 12 packs of 14 for 168 cards with the Silver Crackle Foil parallel, and the fat pack is 1 pack of 36 cards with 2 retail-only inserts.

Cards per box is Rip.fan’s arithmetic from the pack counts.

  • What “listed per box” means. These are typical contents for each format, with no promise that the box in your hands holds them.
  • Retail-only inserts. The mega, blaster and fat pack figures count cards from two insert sets made for retail formats, one of them Stars of MLB. Four of the hanger’s six inserts come from those sets, with one 1991 design insert and one Blended Rate insert listed beside them.
  • Numbered Rainbow Foil. The numbered Rainbow Foil parallels come in hobby packs, from Yellow numbered to 399 down to a one-of-one FoilFractor. They come in jumbo packs too.
  • Other exclusives. Clear Variations, numbered to 10, are hobby only, and a run of Holo Foil parallels goes to the retail formats.

Our guides to Topps Series 1 and 2, parallels and reading a sports card checklist explain the terms.

Which format fits what you want?

Start from the card, not the box:

  • An autograph or a relic. Hobby and jumbo are the formats listed with one per box; jumbo is listed with one of each.
  • A numbered hobby parallel. The Rainbow Foil run is listed for hobby, so a hobby box or jumbo box is the format to look at.
  • A parallel tied to one format. Sandglitter is listed only in jumbo packs, Crackle Foil in megas, Holiday in value blasters, Diamante Foil in hangers and Silver Crackle Foil in the Super Box. No other format carries them, whatever its size.
  • The most cards for building the base set. Jumbo holds the most cards per box, 400 by Rip.fan’s arithmetic, against 240 in hobby.

The same logic holds for any product: find the card on the checklist, note the format its rate is printed against, then buy that format. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes shows how Upper Deck prints a rate for each format beside each card.

What is a case, and what does buying one change?

Upper Deck’s hobby glossary, written in 2009, defines a box as a set number of packs sealed together by the maker, and a case as a set number of boxes in a sealed container, which it says typically holds anywhere from 1 to 18 boxes. For 2026 Topps Series 2, a case holds 12 hobby boxes, 64 hangers or 108 fat packs. The jumbo case count is disputed, so read it off the case label.

A sealed case adds one more layer of factory packaging to check. Upper Deck’s 2011 post on authorized sellers illustrated the problem with a photo of a case that might have been opened and resealed, and said the only way to be sure of its help was to buy new product through its authorized channels.

Where are sports card boxes sold?

Hobby shops and authorized online sellers. Upper Deck’s buying guide, last updated in January 2026, calls a local hobby shop the best place to buy and sends readers to its store locator to find a Certified Diamond Dealer. For online orders it lists a select group of Authorized Internet Retailers. Its e-Pack platform sells packs that are opened online, with the option to have the physical cards mailed. It also names card shows and the trading card sections of large retail stores.

Why the channel matters. In its April 2011 post on authorized sellers, Upper Deck’s customer care manager set out the chain it wanted: distributors sell boxes and cases to Certified Diamond Dealers, shops sell them to collectors, and collectors open them. For any product released within the past 90 days, Upper Deck said, its customer care would help with damage or collation problems only if the box came from a Certified Diamond Dealer or Authorized Internet Retailer, and it would ask for the receipt. A box bought anywhere else was sold as is. That post is 15 years old, so check Upper Deck’s current terms, but keeping the receipt costs nothing.

Marketplaces. Each has its own rules for sealed boxes:

  • eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers an eligible item that never arrives or is not as described, refunding the price and original shipping. Its Authenticity Guarantee excludes boxes and packs, so no authenticator inspects a sealed box before it ships.
  • Whatnot’s Buyer Protection covers an order that does not arrive, arrives damaged or is not what was listed. For sports cards, a request has to come within 7 days after delivery, or 30 days after purchase if that is sooner, and Whatnot asks for photos of the item and its packaging. Sellers must ship sealed wax in a box, never in a bubble mailer.

How do you check a sealed box or case?

  1. Ask for photos of every side, the bottom included. Upper Deck’s 2011 advice was to check for evidence of tampering, such as glue or tape on the packaging.
  2. Check the wrap. Upper Deck said in 2011 that its sealed boxes come in shrink-wrap printed with the company logo, part of its response to pack searching, in which people feel or weigh packs and keep the ones they think hold special cards. It said this mostly happens at retail.
  3. Prefer a sealed box to loose packs, as Upper Deck advised, and buy from a source you trust.
  4. For vintage wax, look for authentication. Look for BBCE, GAI or PSA authentication on vintage boxes and packs.
  5. Match the box to its configuration. Check the product name, the format and, once open, the pack count against the figures above or the maker’s own description.

The signs of a reseal, such as an uneven crimp, glue residue or a second seam on a box, are covered in our guide to spotting resealed packs, and the glossary defines a resealed pack.

What should you do when the box arrives?

Photograph the box on every side before you open it, because those pictures support any claim. Count the packs against the configuration, and report a problem quickly: Whatnot’s window for sports cards is 7 days from delivery, and on eBay, contact the seller through My eBay first, then eBay if the issue is still open after three business days. If a box holds a redemption card, our guide to sports card redemptions explains what to do. To keep a box sealed, see storing sealed product, and if you later sell it, selling sealed product covers the marketplace rules. If you would rather buy a spot in a box than a whole one, our guide to box breaks explains how they work, and the sports cards hub lists every sports guide.

Frequently asked questions

When did 2026 Topps Series 2 presales open?

Topps opened presales on May 11, 2026, a month before the release.

How long do you have to report a suspected fake box on Whatnot?

30 days from receiving the order. Whatnot gives that longer window to any item suspected of being inauthentic, whatever its category.

What if a Whatnot order shows delivered but never arrived?

Contact Whatnot support within 14 days of the date the carrier marked it delivered, so Whatnot can investigate.

Does refusing a Whatnot delivery get you a refund?

No. A refused delivery does not qualify for a refund. Turning off signature confirmation on a high-value US shipment also rules out a claim that it was lost or never received.

How should a seller pack a sealed box for shipping?

On Whatnot, the seller wraps it in protective material before it goes into the shipping box, and the sealed package should barely move when gently shaken.
