Flashfire: the 2014 Pokémon set explained
Pokémon's XY Flashfire of May 2014: its cards block by block, how to tell its Mega Charizard X from its Mega Charizard Y, and the three cards above 106.
By the Rip.fan Editorial Team.
Published 6 min readFlashfire is the XY series expansion of May 2014 with two different Mega Charizard cards. Pokémon called the Dragon-type card Mega Charizard X and the Fire-type card Mega Charizard Y, but both are printed with the same name, M Charizard-EX, so the type and the number are how you tell them apart. Its UK release was May 7, 2014. The set has 110 entries: 106 numbered up to the printed total, 3 numbered above it, and a second Blacksmith entry numbered 88a.
When did Flashfire come out?
Flashfire reached UK stores on May 7, 2014. On March 26, 2014, Pokémon said Flashfire booster packs and theme decks would be in UK stores that day, and on May 9 it said the set was in stores.
The XY set came out earlier, on February 5, 2014. Furious Fists came next, reaching stores on August 13, 2014 as the third expansion in the XY series, which leaves Flashfire as the second. Our guide to Pokémon card eras places the XY series in the longer history, and our guide to the XY base set covers the first expansion.
How many cards are in Flashfire?
The number blocks run like this:
| Numbers | Cards | What they are |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 87 | 87 | Pokémon, including 5 Pokémon-EX and 3 M Pokémon-EX |
| 88 to 99 | 12 | Trainer cards: 6 Items, 4 Supporters, 1 Tool and 1 Stadium |
| 100 to 103 | 4 | Full-art Pokémon-EX |
| 104 to 106 | 3 | Full-art Supporters: Lysandre, Pokémon Center Lady and Pokémon Fan Club |
| 107 to 109 | 3 | Above the printed total: two M Charizard-EX and M Kangaskhan-EX |
The set has no Energy cards at all. A second Blacksmith entry is numbered 88a, which makes 110. The three cards above 106 fit CGC’s definition of a secret rare, a card numbered higher than the set number.
On Rip.fan’s price pages, cards 1 to 109 are labeled like this:
| Label on Rip.fan’s page | Cards | Where they sit |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 31 | Within 1 to 86 |
| Uncommon | 32 | Within 2 to 99, including all 12 Trainers at 88 to 99 |
| Rare | 20 | Within 3 to 85 |
| Rare Holo | 8 | Within 7 to 74 |
| Rare Holo EX | 8 | The Pokémon-EX within 1 to 87 |
| Rare Ultra | 7 | 100 to 106 |
| Rare Secret | 3 | 107 to 109 |
How do you tell Mega Charizard X from Mega Charizard Y?
By the type and the number. Pokémon described two versions of Mega Charizard-EX, calling the Dragon-type one Mega Charizard X and the Fire-type one Mega Charizard Y, yet each card carries the same printed name.
| Card | Number | Type | Matching Mega |
|---|---|---|---|
| M Charizard-EX | 13 | Fire | Mega Charizard Y |
| M Charizard-EX | 69 | Dragon | Mega Charizard X |
| M Charizard-EX | 107 | Fire | Mega Charizard Y |
| M Charizard-EX | 108 | Dragon | Mega Charizard X |
The two sit far apart because the Pokémon run is grouped by type. Fire takes 11 to 20, so the Fire card follows Charizard-EX at 11 and 12. Dragon takes 69 to 74, after Fairy, so the Dragon card opens that run. Above the total, the Fire card again comes first.
Which Charizard cards are in Flashfire?
Seven:
| Number | Card | Label on Rip.fan’s page |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Charizard-EX, credited to Eske Yoshinob | Rare Holo EX |
| 12 | Charizard-EX, credited to PLANETA | Rare Holo EX |
| 13 | M Charizard-EX, Fire | Rare Holo EX |
| 69 | M Charizard-EX, Dragon | Rare Holo EX |
| 100 | Charizard-EX, full art, credited to Ryo Ueda | Rare Ultra |
| 107 | M Charizard-EX, Fire | Rare Secret |
| 108 | M Charizard-EX, Dragon | Rare Secret |
There is no plain Charizard card in the set. The two Charizard-EX at 11 and 12 are separate cards with different illustrators, so match the number to a listing. The 2016 Generations set has a Fire-type M Charizard-EX at 12/83, credited like all four of these to 5ban Graphics; our guide to Generations covers it.

Which other cards come twice?
Kangaskhan has four cards: Kangaskhan-EX at 78 and a full-art Kangaskhan-EX at 103, and M Kangaskhan-EX at 79 and above the total at 109. The three full-art Supporters share their names with cards in the Trainer run: Lysandre at 90 and 104, Pokémon Center Lady at 93 and 105, and Pokémon Fan Club at 94 and 106. Five Pokémon also have two separate cards in the main run: Litleo at 18 and 19, Sneasel at 50 and 51, Stunky at 53 and 54, Flabébé at 62 and 63, and Floette at 64 and 65. On Rip.fan’s price page Floette 64 is labeled Rare and Floette 65 Uncommon, so the number matters in a listing.
What products held Flashfire?
The set came in 10-card booster packs and 60-card theme decks. Check the wrapper of any sealed pack from 2014. Our guide to spotting resealed Pokémon packs covers the signs of a pack that was opened and sealed again.
How do you check Flashfire card prices?
Flashfire has its own page in Rip.fan’s Pokémon price pages, under the XY series heading, abbreviated FLF. It shows each card with its number, rarity and NM market price. Filter it by Rare Holo EX for the eight Pokémon-EX of the main run, or by Rare Secret for the three cards above 106, and sort it by card number to see the X and Y cards in order. For a single card, the card price lookup searches by name, set or number and shows which printing each price is for. The price changes page compares prices between Rip.fan’s weekly checks.
What should you check before buying a Flashfire card?
- X or Y. A listing titled M Charizard-EX could be either. The number settles it: 13 and 107 are the Fire-type card, 69 and 108 the Dragon-type card.
- Main run or above the total. 13/106 and 107/106 are both Fire-type M Charizard-EX, and the card number tells them apart. Our guide to Pokémon card finishes explains full art.
- Flashfire or Generations. An M Charizard-EX reading 12/83 is the 2016 Generations card.
- Genuine cards. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards walks through checks that leave a card unharmed.
Our guide to Mega Evolution cards shows how these M Pokémon-EX differ from the Mega ex cards of 2025 on. The Pokémon hub has the rest of our coverage, and our guide to Roaring Skies covers the 2015 set with two Rayquaza-EX pairs.
