In more detail

PSA was founded in July 1991 as a third-party grader of sports cards. It grew with online auctions, where buyers who could not hold a card wanted an independent view of its condition and authenticity.

A PSA slab carries a label with the card's details and a numerical grade between 1 and 10, along with a cert number that belongs to that slab alone and can be checked on PSA's site. PSA also publishes a population report of the cards it has graded, and it adds a qualifier in brackets when a flaw keeps a card from a higher grade.
