Population report

A population report is a grading company's public count of the cards it has graded: for each card, how many copies received each grade.

Grading
A population report as a chart A bar chart of one card's graded copies, a bar for each grade from the lowest at the left to the top grade at the right. Copies at the top grade: Few suggests a card that is hard to find; Copies at each lower grade: One company's count, for one card. Copies at the top grade Few suggests a card that is hard to find Copies at each lower grade One company's count, for one card

In more detail

PSA publishes its population report free to search, and Beckett has one too. Look a card up and you see how many copies the company has graded in all, how many at the top grade, and how many sit above the one you are considering.

Collectors read the counts for scarcity, because how few copies exist at a grade helps set the price. Few copies at the top grade suggest a card that is hard to find, while thousands suggest heavy submission and prices that stay compressed.

Remember that a report covers only the cards that one company graded. Another company may have graded many more of the same card, so total supply is larger than any single report shows.
