Sports cards sell through four kinds of venue, and each one takes different cards. eBay checks higher-value singles before they reach the buyer. Whatnot sells through live shows and listings and has its own rule for autographs. Auction houses take high-value cards on their own terms, and Sportlots runs fixed-price stores and auctions for singles.
Which venue takes which card?
| What you have | Where it can go | The rule to know first |
|---|---|---|
| Low-priced singles and commons | Sportlots, or eBay’s standard envelope | Sportlots’ store fee depends on your monthly sales, from 75% down to 15% |
| A raw single of more value | eBay or Whatnot | eBay sends raw cards from $200 or $250 through its authentication check |
| An autograph card | eBay or Whatnot | Whatnot names five companies whose certification it accepts |

How should a sports card listing read?
eBay gives sports cards their own title order: the year, then the brand and edition, the player, any special features such as a rookie card or an autograph, and last the grading company and grade. A parallel’s name and a serial number such as 23/99 count as special features too. Whatnot asks for a title and description that cover every detail of the item and its condition, and at least one clear photo of the whole item. Our guides to parallels and serial-numbered cards explain what to look for on the card.
Condition names differ from TCG singles, too. eBay’s ungraded scale for sports cards runs Near Mint or Better, Excellent, Very Good and Poor, while its TCG scale uses store names such as Lightly Played. On the sports scale:
- Excellent allows moderate corner wear with more than one dinged corner, slightly rough edges, and minor discoloration such as wax stains on the back.
- Very Good allows rounding on all four corners and moderate creasing, with more than one crease.
- Poor covers major rounding, missing corners, several major creases and paper loss.
For a graded card, eBay asks for the grader and the numeric grade, and recommends the cert number. Our guide to valuing a sports card covers pricing from sold comps.
What do you need to sell an autograph card?
- On Whatnot, an autograph is accepted only when one of five companies has certified it: B.A.M., Beckett, Fanatics, JSA or PSA. The listing has to show the certificate card in a photo, unless the autograph carries Beckett’s newer sticker. Check with Whatnot before you list an autograph card without a certification card, including one signed for the card maker.
- On eBay, the Authenticity Guarantee covers autograph and relic cards, raw or graded, from $200, with over $250 given elsewhere as the automatic threshold for raw and graded cards. Raw redemption cards are excluded, so a redemption card that has not been redeemed goes without the check. Our guide to sports card redemptions explains how they work.
Our guides to sticker and on-card autographs and checking an autograph card cover what buyers look for.
When does an auction house fit?
When a card is valuable enough to wait for an auction. Goldin has three formats: an always-on Marketplace, a Weekly Auction for items estimated at $100 or more, and an Elite Auction for items estimated at $7,500 or more ($2,500 for its non-sports and vintage Elite auctions). Buyers pay a 22% premium with a $19 minimum. Its sales team sets the auction seller commission. On its Marketplace, graded cards sold for up to $249,999 pay an 8.3% fee, shown as a cut from higher rates below $10,000. Our guide to card consignment compares auction houses on their published terms.
What does a $2,000 slab leave you?
The table works through one graded card sold for $2,000 at each venue’s standard rate. It does not include shipping and sales tax; on Whatnot, both would add to the 2.9% payment fee. It does not include time either: the Goldin figure assumes the card is already in its vault.
| Venue and rate | Fees | Kept |
|---|---|---|
| Whatnot, Baseball Singles or another Singles subcategory | $178.30 | $1,821.70 |
| Goldin Marketplace, graded card | $166.00 | $1,834.00 |
These are Rip.fan’s arithmetic. Whatnot charges its standard 8% on the first $1,500 and nothing above it in a Singles subcategory, under a limited-time promotion running since January 14, 2026, plus 2.9% of the order and $0.30. The promotion needs the right subcategory: a card listed outside a Singles subcategory, or sold in a break, pays the standard rate on the whole price. For eBay, check its own fee page before you list.
How do you sell low-priced singles?
Sportlots charges its fixed-price stores a fee set by your sales in the month. It is 75% when monthly sales are under $5, 50% from $5, 35% from $25, and falls in steps to 15% once they reach $1,500. Its auctions charge 15 cents a listing, plus optional extras. eBay’s standard envelope is its low-cost tracked option for cheap cards, with protection for one card worth up to $20 or several cards up to $50. Our guide to bulk sports cards covers sorting and the other options.
How do you sell a sealed box?
On Whatnot, a sealed box must ship in a box, not a bubble mailer, and bubble wrap is recommended. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee excludes boxes and packs, so a buyer gets no authentication step.
Upper Deck has warned buyers about searched packs and tampered packaging. Its customer care team wrote in 2011 that its sealed boxes come shrink-wrapped with the company logo, and told buyers to look for glue or tape on the packaging. Photograph the wrap on every side so a buyer can check it. Our guide to hobby and retail boxes covers the differences, and spotting fake sports cards covers what buyers check once the box is open.
What happens after the sale?
On eBay, a card in the Authenticity Guarantee goes to the authenticator first, and eBay recommends signature confirmation for cards over $750. Whatnot asks for raw cards in a team bag and for every slab in its own team bag or graded-card sleeve. Buyers of sports cards on Whatnot have 7 days from delivery, or 30 days from purchase if that comes first, to ask for a refund, and 30 days for a suspected fake. Our guides to shipping a graded card and selling graded cards cover the rest, and the sports cards hub lists every sports guide.
