A Secret Lair drop is a small, fixed set of Magic cards with new artwork, sold by Wizards of the Coast through its own Secret Lair store during short sale windows. Wizards tells its retailers that a drop usually holds 4 to 8 cards, and each one’s contents are listed before the sale, so unlike a booster pack you know exactly which cards you are buying. Most drops come in a non-foil and a foil edition, which Wizards’ 2026 announcements price at $29.99 and $39.99. Orders can take up to 3 weeks to ship after the estimated release date.

What is in a Secret Lair drop?

Wizards calls Secret Lair a sub-brand of Magic and describes a drop as a limited run of cards made with artists, creators and brands. Some cards are familiar Magic cards with new art or a new look. Others are new to Magic altogether: the Fallout drop Beyond Vault 33, from January 2026, carried three new-to-Magic designs.

Wizards often sells several drops together in one sale it calls a Superdrop: eight in June 2026’s Cats Are the Best sale and four in January’s Rad sale of Fallout drops. The eight cat-themed drops held 5 cards each, and the four Fallout drops held 5 or 6. A Superdrop can also offer bundles of its drops.

How do bundles compare with single drops?

The Cats Are the Best sale is a worked example. Every drop cost $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil, and three bundles were offered:

Bundle What it held Bundle price Eight or sixteen drops bought singly (Rip.fan’s arithmetic)
Non-foil bundle All 8 drops, non-foil $224.99 $239.92
Foil bundle All 8 drops, foil $299.99 $319.92
Full bundle All 8 drops in both editions $519.99 $559.84

So each bundle came in $14.93 to $39.85 under the single prices, but only if you wanted every drop in it. Bundles carry their own quantity limit, separate from the single drops.

How do the foil and non-foil editions differ?

Only in finish and price. Wizards’ announcements list one set of contents for each drop, with a price for each edition. The foil once called Rainbow Foil is now named Traditional Foil, and it is exactly the same finish as before. Our guide to Magic foil types explains the other foils Wizards uses, and the holofoil entry covers the basic idea.

On price, the 2026 announcements put the foil edition $10 above the non-foil:

Sale Announced Non-foil Foil
Rad Superdrop, three drops January 15, 2026 $29.99 $39.99
Rad Superdrop, Beyond Vault 33 (three new-to-Magic cards) January 15, 2026 $39.99 $49.99
Cats Are the Best Superdrop, all eight drops June 12, 2026 $29.99 $39.99

Prices are set per drop, so check each announcement.

Can you get a drop anywhere but the Secret Lair store?

Sometimes, in non-foil. Wizards said in October 2025 that drops are first sold direct to buyers on the Secret Lair website, in both editions. Some drops with at least one card that is new to Magic then go to stores in Wizards’ retailer network, in non-foil only, a few weeks after the sale. Wizards announced that the non-foil Beyond Vault 33 would also be sold on Amazon, which it called a first.

How does a Secret Lair sale work?

Wizards announces most sales on its Magic site in the weeks before, and some only shortly before. High-traffic sales use a virtual waiting line, made up of a pre-queue and a queue. On the day:

  1. The pre-queue opens. It generally opens an hour before the sale, usually at 8 a.m. PT, with the sale at 9 a.m. PT. You join by adding any product to your cart and going to checkout, then keeping that browser window open.
  2. The sale starts. Wizards sets the places in line for everyone already in the pre-queue when the site goes live. Anyone arriving after the start joins the back of the line, in the order they come.
  3. You check out. A cart does not hold anything: a drop is yours only once checkout is complete.

The queue’s wait time is an estimate and can rise or fall, which does not mean you lost your place. Buyers can usually order up to 2 of each product, and the exact limit appears in the quantity selector.

Most drops are now a limited print run, printed before the sale opens. This speeds up shipping but can mean earlier sellouts, and some drops are still printed on demand. Once a sale closes, generally at 9 a.m. Pacific on its last day, no more orders are taken.

When are you charged?

Usually at checkout. Most sales bill immediately, with some products sold as preorders and charged later. An order holding products with different release dates is charged in full when the first one becomes available, and some large orders are charged at checkout, depending on the order’s total value.

For a preorder, a billing email arrives a few weeks before the release date, generally a week before the first attempt. If a charge fails, the store retries about once a week, and the order is cancelled after four failed attempts. You can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, a credit card (American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa) or, in some countries, PayPal. Your statement shows the charge under ESW, the company that runs payments for the store.

Can you change or cancel an order?

Only while it is uncharged, and then only in some ways.

  • Address or payment method. Change them from Manage Order in your Order History, or from the link in the confirmation email for a guest order. Your saved address book does not update an order already placed.
  • Quantities or contents. These cannot be changed after you order. If the sale is still running and you have not been charged, cancel and order again.
  • Cancelling. An uncharged preorder can be cancelled from Manage Order, but not in part, and a cancelled order cannot be restored.
  • After payment. US store sales are final once payment is collected. Buyers in the EU and UK stores have 14 days to withdraw, no reason needed.

Two orders cannot be merged to share shipping. While the sale is running and before you are charged, the only route is to cancel and order everything again in one cart.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Here the store gives two figures. In one place, an order can take up to 3 weeks to ship after the estimated release date in your confirmation email. In another, the shipping stage can take up to 30 days, and you are asked to contact support if you have no tracking link 30 days after the release date. Treat both as estimates.

Question Answer
Free shipping US orders over $99, before tax and after discounts; EU orders over 99 euros; UK orders over 89 pounds. Other shipping fees are shown at checkout
Drops with different release dates Split shipping may be offered at checkout; otherwise the order waits for its last release date
Where the US store ships The US and 23 other countries and territories in the Americas and Asia-Pacific
Where the EU store ships 34 European countries
Import fees from the US store Orders under $2,500 to those 23 places ship duty paid, with the total settled at checkout; at $2,500 or more, you pay customs on arrival. A local post office may still ask for payment
A parcel stuck in transit After two weeks, contact the carrier first, then support with a screenshot of that contact

What if a card arrives damaged?

For an order from the Secret Lair store, Wizards offers a replacement through its support portal. For Secret Lair products bought at retail, Wizards’ replacement process shows what it treats as a defect. It covers faults found when the product is first opened in its original packaging. For a single card it asks for real defects, such as deep nicks, bent corners, miscut edges or ink problems. A card with only minor wear may come back in similar condition, and Wizards says it cannot promise a perfect copy. If most of a drop is damaged, missing cards or wrong, the whole product goes back with its packaging. Cards bought used on the secondary market are not covered, and a drop bought on Amazon goes to Amazon instead.

That retail process asks for a photo of the damaged product beside a handwritten note with your name and the date. The production code, a short mix of letters and numbers printed underneath the black or white outer box, helps support identify the product. Our guide to card condition problems covers wear, print lines and the other flaws to look for.

What should you do after the sale ends?

Wizards says a drop is no longer on sale once its sale closes. Apart from the non-foil copies that reach stores, later copies change hands on the secondary market, which you can treat like any sealed product:

  1. Buy from a seller with a good record. Wizards’ own advice for sealed Magic product is to use a reputable dealer and check that nothing has been resealed; our resealed pack entry explains the signs.
  2. Check recent sold prices, not asking prices. Our guide to checking Magic card prices shows how, and market, listed and sold prices explains the difference.
  3. Keep sealed drops away from heat and light, as our guide to storing sealed product covers.

For the rest of Magic, see Magic card rarities, Collector Boosters and the trading card hub. If you are still choosing what to collect, our guide to which cards to collect sets the main ones side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is generative AI allowed in Secret Lair art?

No. Wizards requires the artists, writers and other creatives on Magic to refrain from using generative AI tools to make final Magic products. In June 2024, Wizards announced a pilot with Artistree to build its own AI detection tool.

Do you need a Wizards Account to order a Secret Lair drop?

No. An order can be placed while signed in to a Wizards Account or as a guest, and signed-in orders can be managed on the Secret Lair website itself.

Why can't I open the Secret Lair store?

The Secret Lair website goes down for maintenance from time to time, usually for 48 hours or less. If an order needs a change before its release date during that downtime, Secret Lair customer support can make it.

What if a Secret Lair parcel shows as delivered but never arrived?

File a lost-package claim with the carrier first, then contact Secret Lair customer support. If you believe it was stolen, or the carrier will not take a claim, report mail theft to local police and give support the case number.

Do Secret Lair orders include digital content?

Some do. Once such an order has been charged, its digital content appears on the order's confirmation page.
