Before you pay for a graded card online, run five checks: photos of that exact slab, the cert number looked up on the grading company’s own site, the holder and label, the return window, and the seller’s record. The cert lookup does the most work, because a grader like CGC photographs every card it seals and shows those images to anyone with the number. The platform decides what happens if something is wrong. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee inspects eligible cards of $200 or more before they reach you.

What should the listing show?

A good listing shows the actual slab and the details you need to look it up. For graded cards, eBay’s guidance to sellers recommends stating the certification number, the numeric grade and the grading company. It also asks for several clear photos: both sides of the card, the grading label, and any flaw worth showing.

If a listing lacks any of those, ask the seller before you bid. Three things are worth asking for:

  • Photos of that exact slab, never a stock image or a photo of a similar card.
  • A readable label, so you can read the cert number yourself.
  • The back of the holder, since a CGC label carries a QR code on its back.

How do you check the cert number?

The cert number is the unique number on a graded card’s label. Look it up on the grading company’s own site, typed in by hand; never follow a link the seller sends.

  • CGC. A CGC label carries the cert number and the grade, and its QR code is on the back of the label. CGC images every graded card after sealing it in the holder, and its Verify CGC Certification tool shows those images at any hour.
  • SGC. SGC’s site has a cert code lookup, where you enter the slab’s cert code.

Then compare. The card name, set, number and grade in the record should match the listing. With CGC you can go further and compare CGC’s own image of the card with the seller’s photos: the same centering, the same print marks, the same label. The lookup proves a record exists, and the image shows which card the record belongs to. If anything differs, or no record comes up, don’t buy until you know why.

What should the holder and label look like?

CGC describes its holder as an ultrasonically welded case that resists impacts and tampering. To guard against counterfeits, its label combines microprinting, UV ink and holographic foil with a cert number and barcode unique to the card. The standard holder measures about 3.15 by 5.30 inches, and CGC makes thick holders in five thicknesses for cards up to 7.25mm thick.

From photos, you can check that the label text is sharp, that the holographic foil is there, and that the holder shows no cracks or gaps at the edges. In hand, scan the QR code and check that it opens the card’s record on CGC’s own site.

A damaged holder is a warning sign in its own right: deep marks or cracks weaken the card’s protection, and breakage can mean tampering.

What does eBay do if something is wrong?

eBay Authenticity Guarantee
Which cards Single cards, raw or graded, listed at $200 or more before tax and shipping (an auction counts by its final price), in listings with the blue checkmark badge
Graders it accepts PSA, SGC, CGC, CSG and BGS
Check before you get it An authenticator inspects the holder for tampering, checks the case and label against the grader, and confirms the card matches the listing
If the card fails or arrives wrong Full refund if it can’t be verified or doesn’t match the listing
Deadline For a damaged card on a final-sale purchase, 3 calendar days after delivery
Other returns Follow the seller’s return policy; if the seller takes no returns, the sale is final

Two limits on eBay’s program are worth knowing. It covers only buyers and sellers in the United States, with some restrictions for sellers in Canada, and it excludes local-pickup listings, US territories, military addresses and PO boxes. And it confirms authenticity and the match with the listing, not the grade: no regrading takes place.

What about a card labeled Authentic?

Some slabs say “Authentic” instead of a number. It means the grading company confirmed the card is genuine but assigned it no numeric condition grade, so its surface, corners, edges and centering were never graded. If condition matters to you, buy a card with a numeric grade. Our guide to card condition grades explains what each step means.

How do you judge the seller and the price?

Read the seller’s record before the card. Look at feedback on that platform, how long the seller has sold graded cards, and how clearly they answer questions.

Check the price yourself against recent sales of the same card in the same grade. Our guide to finding what a card sold for shows how. For Pokémon cards, Rip.fan’s card price lookup shows the NM market price of raw copies, searched by name, set or number; graded copies sell at different prices, so compare a slab only with sales of slabs.

What should you do when the slab arrives?

Open the package on the day it arrives, and photograph the slab and the packing before you do anything else. Check the holder for cracks, compare the label with your saved lookup, and scan the QR code. Report a problem inside the window: 3 calendar days for a damaged final-sale card under eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee.

Then add the card to your records with its cert number, price and date. Our guides to storing graded cards and insuring a card collection cover what comes next. Buying in person instead? Our guide to your first card show covers the same checks at a table, and are rip site cards real? covers slabs you open on a rip site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you cancel an eBay slab order that goes through Authenticity Guarantee?

Yes, within an hour of buying, from Purchase History, if the seller hasn't shipped it. eBay can't change the delivery address on these orders.

How does a slab arrive after eBay's check?

In eBay's custom packaging, sealed with a tamper-proof sticker and carrying a QR code sticker that opens the card's authentication details. Cards of $1,500 and up need a signature on delivery.

Will CGC put a fake card in a slab?

No. CGC rejects a card of questionable authenticity for grading, and its graders never see who sent a card in, since each card is separated from its submission paperwork.

What else can a CGC label show besides the grade?

The back of the label can carry an autograph grade, for sports cards with a maker's certified autograph, and a pedigree naming a past or present owner. A card graded CGC Pristine 10 gets a special Pristine 10 label.
