SGC

SGC, short for Sportscard Guaranty, is a card grading company launched in 1998. It is best known for vintage sports cards and for slabs with a black insert behind the card.

An SGC label, laid out like SGC's example holder A generic graded-card holder laid out like the one example on SGC's cert lookup page. Four description lines run down the left of the label. In the middle is the autograph grade, with AUTO above it and GRADE below it. A dividing line separates it from the card grade on the right, which has a small GM badge. The cert code sits in the bottom right corner, under the card grade: 7 digits on a black label. The card sits in a black insert inside the holder. 10 10 Generic holder Description, four lines Year, maker and set; card number and name; insert; parallel and serial number Autograph grade AUTO above it, GRADE below it Card grade, with a GM badge Right of the dividing line Cert code, bottom right 7 digits on a black label Black insert SGC's terms describe it

In more detail

SGC built its name grading vintage cards, and its slabs with a black insert, which collectors call the Tuxedo, are a familiar sight on older cards. Its top grade is a 10, as at the other main companies.

Collectors, PSA's parent company, owns SGC. The two still grade as separate companies under their own names.

SGC announced that from September 2, 2026 it would change its service levels, citing heavy demand and longer waits. Its services page, which we read on October 9, 2026, lists Standard grading at 40 or more business days and Expedited at 2 to 3.
