Bowman Sterling is a Bowman baseball release of chromium cards built around prospects and rookies, sold in hobby boxes of five packs of six cards with five autographs in each box. The most recent edition is 2024, which came out on October 9, 2024. The name also turns up on two other things, an insert set in 2026 Bowman and the separate Topps Sterling, so the first job is knowing which Sterling a card is.

Which Sterling is it?

What comes in a Bowman Sterling box?

Edition Released Packs per box Cards per pack Autographs per box
2021 October 1, 2021 5 5 5
2022 October 19, 2022 5 6 5
2023 November 3, 2023 5 6 5
2024 October 9, 2024 5 6 5

Boxes come 12 to a case for 2022 to 2024 and 12 to a crate for 2021. The 2024 autographs are chrome. The 2023 packs are mini-boxes, each with one signed card. The 2019 box holds four autographs and one memorabilia card instead of five autographs. By Rip.fan’s arithmetic, a 2024 box holds 30 cards and a case 60 packs. Bowman Sterling sells as hobby boxes; our guide to hobby and retail boxes explains the difference.

How is the 2024 base set built?

The base set has 100 cards in two numbered runs: 50 prospects coded BSP-1 to BSP-50 and 50 rookies coded BSR-1 to BSR-50. The base set has no other kind of player. Established stars such as Aaron Judge and Mike Trout appear only in the autograph and insert sets.

The base list and the autograph lists overlap only in part. 34 of the 50 base prospects also have a Prospect Autograph, and 18 of the 50 base rookies have a Rookie Autograph. The other way round, 23 of the 57 Prospect Autograph signers have no base card at all, so a signed prospect may have no unsigned base card to match it. Our guide to Bowman Chrome and 1st Bowman cards covers how Bowman’s other prospect releases mark a player’s first card.

What do the card codes mean?

Each set has its own code.

Code 2024 set Card numbers Card rate
PA Prospect Autographs 57 1 in 2 packs
ST Sterling-Tek 25 1 in 60 packs
SS Sterling Superstars 25 1 in 61 packs
RA Rookie Autographs 18 1 in 87 packs
SEA Sterling Extravaganza Autographs 26 1 in 89 packs
STA Sterling-Tek Autographs 19 1 in 190 packs

BSP (Base Prospects) and BSR (Base Rookies) have 50 card numbers each, DRA (Dual Refractor Autographs) has 13 and TRA (Triple Refractor Autographs) has 9.

Triple Refractor Autographs are numbered to 25, and the Sterling-Tek insert is numbered to 99. A rate of 1 in 2 packs means one such card for every two packs, and any one box can differ. Prospect Autographs have the most frequent rate: one per two packs, about two and a half per box by Rip.fan’s arithmetic, against one per 87 packs for Rookie Autographs, about one per 17 boxes.

Sterling Extravaganza Autographs were new in 2024, and they and Sterling-Tek Autographs add established players to the prospects. Of the 26 Extravaganza signers, 11, among them Aaron Judge, Mike Trout, Juan Soto and Clayton Kershaw, have no base card in the set.

How do the Refractor parallels work?

Every base card and most autographs come in Refractor colors, but the base and signed ladders differ. The Refractor, Sterling Silver and Speckle autographs are numbered to 150, 100 and 99. The base set has those colors too, with Mini-Diamond and Magenta.

Color Base card Prospect Autograph
Wave Not in the set 125
Orange Not in the set 75
Gold 50 50
Blue and Blue Sterling Scintillate 25 each 25 each
Copper 15 Not in the set
Rose Gold Not in the set 15
Black Lava 10 10
Red and Red Sterling Scintillate 5 each 5 each
SuperFractor 1 of 1 1 of 1

The base set also has printing plates, each 1 of 1. In practice, a Prospect Autograph Refractor is stamped /150, and a /15 card is Copper on a base card but Rose Gold on a Prospect Autograph. The Blue and Red Sterling Scintillate and the Copper Refractors are new for 2024. Our guides to sports card parallels and serial-numbered cards explain numbered colors in general.

How to check a Bowman Sterling card before you buy

  1. Make sure it is Bowman Sterling, not a 2026 Bowman BST insert or a Topps Sterling card.
  2. Read the code: BSP and BSR are base cards, and the autograph codes tell you which signed set it is.
  3. Match the color and stamp to the right ladder, base or signed.
  4. For an autograph, check whether it is signed on the card or on a sticker, as our guide to sticker and on-card autographs explains.
  5. Measure the borders with our centering checker, then price the exact card and color from recent sales, as our guide to finding what a card sold for explains.

Our guide to Bowman Draft covers another Bowman prospect release, Topps Tribute covers a high-end Topps release built on autographs, and the sports cards hub lists the rest.
