Slab label

A slab label is the printed label sealed inside a graded card's holder. It names the card and its grade and carries the certification number that ties the card to the grading company's record.

Also called Grading label.

In more detail

CGC Cards describes its label as a detailed card description with the grade and a unique certification number and barcode. To guard against copies it adds microprinting, UV ink and holographic foil, and a QR code on the back links to the card's record and images on CGC's site.

The label can carry more than the grade. CGC prints Authentic Altered in the grade box for a genuine card that has been altered, puts autograph grades on the back of the label, and can add a pedigree naming a past or present owner. Cards graded Pristine 10 get a special label of their own.

Read the label against the card. eBay asks sellers of graded cards to list the grader and the grade, with the certification number recommended, and to photograph any grading labels. A label that names a different card, or a number with no record, is a reason to stop.
