Crossover

A crossover is a request to move a card that one company already graded into another company's holder, usually only if the new grade is at least as high.

Also called cross over.

Grading
How a crossover works Four steps, each with a small drawing, from one company's slab to another's. First, A slab from one company: Sent to another company; Second, Inspected in its old case: The new company decides its number first; Third, Opened only for the same grade or higher: Unless the submitter asks to cross at any grade; Fourth, Sealed in the new holder: With a new certification number. 1 A slab from one company Sent to another company 2 Inspected in its old case The new company decides its number first 3 Opened only for the same grade or higher Unless the submitter asks to cross at any grade 4 Sealed in the new holder With a new certification number

In more detail

Collectors cross cards over to match the rest of a set, or because one company's slabs sell for more for a given card. The new company inspects the card while it is still in the old case and decides what number it would give before it opens anything.

At CGC Cards, for example, a PSA, Beckett or SGC slab is opened only when CGC expects the same grade or a higher one. Otherwise the card comes back in the case it arrived in and the fee is still charged. A submitter can instead ask CGC to cross the card at any grade, which accepts a lower number.

A crossover costs the same as grading at the matching service level, so it makes sense mostly for cards where the holder itself changes the price. The new label carries a new certification number, and the old one no longer describes the card.
