Redemption card

A redemption card is a stand-in placed in a pack when a card, usually an autograph, was not ready in time. The collector redeems it with the maker and later receives the card it stands for, or a replacement.

In more detail

Makers rely on players to sign autograph cards and send them back. When the signed cards do not reach the maker before the product is packed, CGC's glossary explains, a redemption card goes into the pack in their place and gives its holder the right to the card once the maker has it.

Upper Deck handles its redemptions through an online account. Customer care gives a status once more than 45 days have passed since a card was redeemed on the site, and a card no longer in stock can be replaced with one of equal secondary market value, picked by Upper Deck from up to 5 players or teams the collector names.

This is a different thing from redeeming a card on a rip site, where you ask the site to ship a card it holds. Upper Deck also limits lost mail claims to six months after a redemption ships, so track a redeemed card until it arrives.
