Half grade
A half grade is a grade that falls between two whole numbers on a 1 to 10 grading scale, such as 8.5. It marks a card that is better than the lower whole grade but short of the next one.
In more detail
CGC Cards names a half grade at every step from 1.5 to 9.5, such as Excellent+ for 5.5 and Near Mint+ for 7.5. Its description of a 9.5 shows the idea: a card at the 9 level with extra eye appeal, such as exceptional centering or color.
Not every grade has halves. Above 9.5, CGC uses only 10s, Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10, and at the bottom of the scale a 1 sits below the lowest half grade, 1.5. CGC's autograph grades run from 5 to 10 with no half grades at all.
A half grade from one company is not a promise of the same number at another. When you compare sales, match the company and the exact grade, since an 8.5 and a 9 of the same card sell as different items.
